Topic: 722 Compact Flash > Heat

Was out at a show with Sleepypedro the other night..  he asked how hot my 722 got when using the CF.  I do not use it at all, just the  Hard Drive..  He had a spare card from an R1 so instantly an experiment was born...

Ran for 1:52 and completely filled the card without a break - our guess was that no moving parts would equate to Zero heat..

WRONG - the unit was warm to the touch but not hot by any stretch.  My thinking is that the Phantom Power and the rest of the unit still generate some heat. The unit was in my bag the entire time with the top closed.

Thoughts from CF users appreiciated.

did you disable or remove the internal harddrive?  I'm guessing that would make the difference.  I'm not sure if they spin down the HD when writing exclusively to flash.

wow, that's too bad.  I was thinking that when flash gets cheap enough, I'd go that way.  Maybe not.

Please keep in mind that the heat was not bad..Even stealthing would have been tollerable for 2 hours with that heat.

When the HD is spinning...  damm its way to hot for a crotch..

Oh, I missunderstood how warm you meant.

The one time I stealthed the 722 resting on my belly, I was really uncomfortable.  I was thinking that when flash gets cheap enough that I can afford a SFF flash drive to replace the rotating drive inside, that might help it run cooler (and be more shock tolerant).

Exactly where we were heading... looks like a viable option... I get 1:55 on a 4Gig at 24/96 and nearly double that at 24/44.1 if that helps.

When disabled it is supposed to spin down the drive and park the head to avoid damage (at least that's what I read in the book when mine came in the other day)
