722 and JW AKG's
« on: June 07, 2007, 05:25:30 PM »
Those with JW mod AKG's and 722's what do you all do with the gain? I've tried just about everything. Attenuating on the mics. Phantom on line and mic in and switch in the middle and low gain setting. Which is the prefered method?

Thanks, ts

Low gain setting, switch in the no attenuation setting always worked fine. Ran the pits around 12:00 and this always worked great for me.

So thats switch in the mic setting, right? Or just put phantom on mic when using the low gain setting.

if I run jwMod > 722 I run Mic In (with phantom of course) no pad or rolloff on the mics.  I have always run low-gain with the Mic-In. I've run some quieter acoustic stuff as well and always had plenty of gain.

the psp2 is much hotter than the V2 i used to run so I have had to run the pads on the mics, but its not because of any sonic differences/preferences

to change from Low or Normal gain you must change the setting in the menu - you can also set phantom for either mic or line or both or neither. the switch above the XLR inputs is Mic/Line/Digi

gain structure is:
Normal Mic In = 25 to 70db
Low Mic In = 10 to 55db
Line In = -6 to 18db
JW mod AKG 460b (ck61/ck63 or mk46/ck1x/ck3x)>  EAA PSP-2 > 722

Yep, I'm pretty familiar with all your'e talking about. I've had my 722 for couple years now. Sorry for sounding stupid. Was just wondering if there is a prefered method. Like, does one solution produce better results than the other. 480>722 users are probably experiencing the same thing.

i was kinda confused because I knew you were running the combo long before I had my 722 but you never know...

i have found IME that it tends to be the external pre amp that has a sweet spot of how loud its run, the mics not so much, but ive seen the 722 does some fucked up stuff when maxed on gain.

definitely. so I'll stick with the low gain. when the V3 is in front, I don't worry about this stuff.
