Author Topic: Is the USB really there/computer help please! (Read 5376 times)

Let me start of by saying that I have a piece of crap computer (emachines from like1998 366i2) and I am on my way to desktop heaven when I get my new one. But until then I will have to deal with the shite that I have right now.....

I am trying to hook up a CF card reader and my computer acts as though its not even pluged in.....Drivers not installed? Maybe thats the problem. I was wondering if there was anybody on the Board that could give me some short and sweet tech support so that I can load up some pics on ebay, Taperssection.com and other places.....I am stuck right now and I would appreciate any extension of expertise......

What operating system? If it's Windows NT, you have to insert the USB and then reboot the system with the device still plugged in.

did you actually install the drivers that came with the device? if nothing came with it, can you search out the manufacturer's website or try driverguide.com (login/pwd = drivers/all)?
do other devices work on that usb port?
check in your device manager, are there any devices with a yellow (?) or (!) next to them?

Still...if you haven't tried it yet, try rebooting with the device plugged in. If you have, you'll have to go to the Device Manager and check to see if there's any conflicts. Unfortunately, it's been a while since I've used the Win 98 SE, so I don't remember how everything is laid out.

This computer has been thru alot....I dont have any other usb devices and the card reader worked fine at work. Just used it primarily for surfing and Word prs. it does display (intel82371AB/EB PCI to USB) with a (!) by it. Is that good or bad....

that could be it.
double click on it and let us know what it says, you may be able to find a driver upgrade through the web search if it is connected.

I clicked next and it displayed the following:

it displays the following tabs: General, Advanced, Driver, resources.....

ok...close out of properties. right click on device and choose uninstall. reboot. it should detect it and install new hardware. if it doesn't find the driver on it's own see if there's a web update option. should be pretty common.

when I right click the device it doesn't give me any options at all....No way to uninstall. doesnt give me a choice to.

Simp, I found what you were talking about. I was in the wrong place....Its asking me to insert the Win98SE CD ROM now.... what can i do at this point...

ok, highlight the device and click remove down below. then reboot.

hmm...i take it you don't have the cd. search out the driver online manually, save it somewhere on your hard drive, and then tell it you have the disk and point to that folder.

I know cocoapuff is running 98, but I just wanted to point out for those who might not know that Windows NT does NOT support USB.

Hmmm...interesting. I must have some additional s/w or something on one of my office 'puters; 'cause I use my Zip drive via USB all the time. Must be some software from Iomega or something that allows this

NT 4 can use USB. cant remember which service pack is needed but it is possible.
it(the USB device) also needs a special driver explicitly for NT 4

Interesting, I had always read/been taught it does not... Maybe a combination of SP6a and specialized drivers? There's no real word from Microsoft except a TechNet KB doc that says they have no plans for USB support.

Google searches reflect otherwise, so I guess I'll put a conditional on my warning above...

yeah, the problem is most manufacturers don't provide the special NT 4 driver

Yes...just getting back to this: it is an NT box (don't remember the SP #); but I remember the instructions for the unit specifically state that when connecting or disconnecting the USB from a Win NT box, that you must reboot. Funny thing though, that our IT would order up a box that has the USB hardware with NT software. Ah, well...it soon becomes a moot point as it's slated to be XP'd soon. I've been trying to convince'em to load up Linux so I can play with...er, that is, learn more about it.
