NO sound from computer....
« on: March 16, 2005, 09:46:09 PM »
 >:(  I need to figure out how to get the sound back on my computer....Rebooted and zap.  No sound.  Went to the control panel and looked in the Sound tab and it said "NO AUDIO Device"  Is there a quick fix for this.....

Sorry for the novice question...I know that it is something that I am overlooking and I thought someone here could help....

Check the drivers in the device manager. Or, just try reloading whatever audio system driver cam with your computer.

I was fooling around with msconfig and some of the "services" are missing.......You know of a way to restore them.
(taking your reinstall drivers advice in the meantime)

Yeah...the reinstall drivers is the only route I know of. I've encountered similar problems in the past, but the only occured when I had f-disked my hard drive and forgotten to reinstall all of the drivers.

Actually...if this just happened recently, a system restore might be your best bet.

Yeah, tried the driver installation and nada.  I was in msconfig under the "services" tab when everything went south....It has something to do wth somethingh in there.  I wonder if there is a way to find missing services.....(wonder if this is making any sense)

As far as the services bit goes, I know nothing about it. Doesn't mean it's not the problem...only that I've never dealt with it before.

I will have to just suffer and hope that it fixes itself.  I shouldn't have been in there messing around with stuff....

whatever you do, don't mess with services.  i had a similar service type problem last week.  went in there pokin around after i saw that thread on twaeking XP.  well i must have done something strange because afterwards i was connected to the internet, could release/renew IP address, had correct gateway and DNS servers, but no application could connect to anything.  played around with all the services for a long time trying to figure out which one i had turned off, decided to just format, reinstall since i hadn't done so in some time.

if you goto control panel > system > hardware tab > device manager.

in there you should see your card listed under "sound video and game controllers."

if it is listed with a yellow question mark under "Other devices" then you still have a driver issue.

is your soundcard even being picked up in your device manager? even if just as a yellow splat because its an unknown device?

most likely, if it is listed as unknown, it will be listed as "unknown audio device"

but regardless if there is anything listed in the unknown device section, you should check it out, especially if it is listed in a PCI location.
