Title: What techniques/equipment is used to lay down complex snycopation?

Like aphextwin or squarepusher or the tons of amateur techno artists that lay down crazy syncopated beats. Surely they dont point and click every part of the ryhtm, there has to be a way to lay down a crazy beat without losing sight of what your creating in the process.
