Topic: cheapest 16bit I/O for laptop?

Hey now folks...
i'm thinking about picking up a cheap laptop so that I'll be ready for 24bit again w/that new firewire Edirol box ever ships to me.

I'd have to liquidate my JB3 in the meantime to generate some funds, and i'm wondering what the best way to interface my AD1000 w/a laptop will be.  I was thinking about one of those cheap edirol 16bit i/o > usb jobs.  I dont really care if its bit perfect or not.  I just want to get signal in the lappy and of course I want it stable.  I'm not interested in anything that will work beyond my needs as the FA-101 will use firewire to interface and that is a very cheap card to buy (in place of pocket VX, for instance)

the cheapest would probably be the Edirol UA-1D...you can find those new for between $75-100

I'd say that's your best bet. If you keep your eyes open you could get a good deal on a VX pocket... I paid $150 for mine new off musiciansfriend last year.

m-audio transit is also usb and is cheap at $70 but i think it is optical i/o only

oh and it claims up to 24/96 recording

Just bought a used ibook G3/600 running Peak DV3 on OSX... might be using it once in a while to record (real time) on-site then burn the CD's for bands . Anyone have opinions/suggestions in regards to this old topic M-Audio Transit vs. Edirol UA-1D on this platform?

Never had issues with my transit.  Used it in the field probably around 15 times.  It is basically just a external soundcard.  Have not recorded at 96k yet in 24bit but have in 48k.  Optical in though may cause issues with some requiring a hosa box.  Great for me though cause I had an ad20 and use a ua-5 now.  Think I paid around 75-80 and purchased it off of amazon.  Supposed to be bit perfect(from what I have read, have not tested this).

Thanks for the imput. Looks like Transit has my vote so far. I did notice it supports ASIO2 and the Edirol doesn't.
