Title: Power protection advice needed
Post by: heathen on March 15, 2019, 06:06:20 PM
After a recent storm made my power go out, and caused an unpleasant sound through my stereo (no damage done, but I still didn't like it), I think I need to get some proper surge protection for my stereo.  I'm not talking about a "power conditioner," but just protection from surges and the like (if it also happens to include power conditioning that's fine unless it's doing more harm than good).  I'll need at least eight outlets (preamp, monoblock power amps, subwoofer, a couple digital sources, TV, record player).  Can anyone recommend something?

Would something like this do the job? https://tmraudio.com/components/power-products/apc-g5-power-conditioner-rack-mount-9-outlet/

I was also looking at this: https://www.crutchfield.com/p_299SP8AV/Panamax-SP8-AV.html?tp=568

Any other suggestions are certainly welcome.

I have two of these Furman power conditioners  https://www.amazon.com/Furman-M-8X2-Outlet-Conditioner-Protector/dp/B003BQ91Y6/ref=asc_df_B003BQ91Y6/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=312118595187&hvpos=1o4&hvnetw=g&hvrand=9455699856289224295&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9024249&hvtargid=pla-405660643648&psc=1 (https://www.amazon.com/Furman-M-8X2-Outlet-Conditioner-Protector/dp/B003BQ91Y6/ref=asc_df_B003BQ91Y6/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=312118595187&hvpos=1o4&hvnetw=g&hvrand=9455699856289224295&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9024249&hvtargid=pla-405660643648&psc=1)

one in my tape rack and one in my mix desk. I think they are the best value for this sort of thing. 9 outlets total - one on the front, 3 of them are spaced for a bigger wall wart type plug.

Very effective for RFI/EMI and filtering the power in my 100 year old house that conveniently has modern dimmers wired all wrong to the ceiling fan in my music room  . My playback is dead silent.

I would bet there are a couple on your local CL right now.

How do they do in terms of surge protection?  That's my primary concern...with power filtering/conditioning a distant second.

Just for awareness, surge protectors have a limited life, much unlike most electronics. (well, except crapacitors)
The more "hits" the MOVs inside take, the faster they become ineffective.
At the shop we rotate them out every three years.

They have a circuit breaker that trips if the surge can't be handled by the regulatory circuitry. I've never tripped it so no practical experience with what could be a damaging event.

I get surges when the furnace turns on or the dishwasher heating element kicks in. Enough to make the lights in the house do weird shit. Never tripped the breaker though.

Since these are rack mount they might not be exactly what you are looking for. 19" across the front but only 5 or 6 inches deep.

Tripplite is the other professional brand other than Furman that I see in just about every rack that I come across. If it's good enough for a studio to protect a rack full of out board preamps that average $500+ a channel it's good enough for me.
