Title: Female XLR to 1/4 in mic cable question.
Post by: ts on August 19, 2011, 12:44:48 PM
Been shopping around for a pair of these cables and have noticed that most of them are of low quality. Checked Mogami and Canare and although they do have them and call them either patch or mic cable, the 1/4 inch connector is two ring/stereo. The cheapo cables are all one ring/mono. Searched extensively and can't seem to find a better quality mono or maybe it doesn't matter ???. Looking fo 5 meter length X2. Thanks.

Tony,

I recently made a set of xlrs for someone using naks.  Doug oade said to do a jumper between pins 1&3 on the male side.  I will get you a qoute later today using a male mono on the mixer side.

Canare makes balanced TRS (Tip - Ring - Sleeve) 1/4" connectors. They also make an unbalanced  TS (Tip - Sleeve) 1/4" connector. Very High Quality. The only issue with Canare is that their bodies are big (beefy metal) and in some spaces fit tight. Neutrik also makes high quality connectors.

What you are wanting are TS cables to XLR. As Oade recommends, the standard is to wire pins 1 and 3 together (ground) at the Male XLR. Pin 2 hot.

As important if not more is to get well shielded cable. Belden 1505F is the cable I prefer for unbalanced cables.
