ADK TL's
« on: March 23, 2004, 01:26:47 PM »
Ok, decided to sell my mk4's that I have not been overly happy with to get something new to play with. Very interested in playing with omni's and figure 8 so I figured the TL's would be the easiest way to go, most bang for the buck.

I have never used LD mics. What kind of hardware will I need for these? are the shockmounts that come with them good for field use? what kind of mountbar do I need? what other hardware do I need to run XY or blumlein?

thanks, haven't had much luck searching the site for these answers.

the shockmounts i got with my tl's in dec 02 have worked great.  never had a problem with em.  i used a regular stereo bar for about a year, and just picked up a vert bar recently.  got a clamp from phil about 5 months ago.  i use the clamp + vert bar for blumein.  i have used the stereo bar solo for xy, but i like the cleaner look that the vert bar provides for xy.  moke has some pics of him using blumein and vertical xy.  so does tim with his u89's.

you can always call larry villella at adk and he can give u some info on what they ship nowadays.

your mics should always sound the same with screens on... the screens should attenuate all fq's equally across the board or else they are worthless....

it has to do with basically lenghtening the vert bar so you don't have to use a clamp.  there are pics of it somewhere in the rig pics section.

since I dont run LDs I dont know the answer to this, but why wouldnt you run the mics on their sides?  If you space the two threads on the shure bar to the extreme ends, it will fit.  I must be missing something...

I find pictures to be very useful. You can write down the location of the mics and try and describe it but a photo really brings the recording location to life and helps a listener who wasn't present to better understand the location of the mics in the hall and, hopefully, better comprehend the sound of the tape.

Damon - you know what, I almost wrote exactly that. diarrhea of the mouth!

Chris - hold your thumb up and imagine your fingernail is the diaphragm, hold it straight up. Now turn your thumb on it's side. See?

there is some dispute as to whether the housing of the mic might affect the way the sound waves reach the diaphragm when the mic is on it's side. Robert Kwon has some info on this.

if you get a regular stereo bar, put the shockmounts on with the screew dealie at a 90 degree angle.  then the mics sit vertically, but on a horizontal plane

like this:
x      x
x-----x
x      x

where the x's are the 2 bodies, and the -'s represent the stereo bar.  to run din/ortf, just adjust your shockmount/mic spacing and degrees accordingly.

i think phil has some pics of me and tim from phil and phriends running ortf/din.

The reason I came up with that mod for the vert bar is I didn't trust putting the mics sideways fearing they'd come loose and gravity would take over.

I guess people run them horizontally with no trouble?

i run my tl's in xy by just screwing the top shockmount into the top of my stand.  then just put a clamp my other shockmoutn below it.  no need to spend extra cash on getting another stereo bar if you already have a clamp.

Robert Kwon sent me some emails about the effect that the housing of a LD may have when the mic is run horizontally... I'll see if I can find them. Basically they couldn't confirm anything but they had an idea on how to test for any effects.

yeah, I think it's similar to the issue of using the trim knobs on the V2....the POTENTIAL is there to introduce noise, but it may not(I know, not the best analogy)

I cut a piece of cardboard in a small right angle V to hold above the mics and then see if the lines across the tops of the grill are even?
