Recommend me some new shock mounts for my AKG 480s
« on: October 12, 2007, 09:41:22 AM »
i've been using the AT8410a shock mounts forever now, and they're pretty much shot.

i'd like to try something new. preferably something with a lower profile and not too expensive.

anyone got any recommendations?

i've tried a few things but it seems that the ATs work the best i've found.    i wish they were not so big and bulky.   i got some a20s's a while back and while i could get the 480s in them, it felt like i was going to snap them everytime.    i also tried those shure donuts a53s i think.   i also thought those were a little snug.   i bought some cheapos at one point (don't remember what kind) and they did not hold up.

i've stuck with the ATs but would love to know what better options people are using.

Built like a tank, all metal; only drawback is the weight.
I find it easier to get the mics in if I use two bands on each end rather than the four they ship with, If you remove two bands from each end, then you have two complete sets for spares (they ship with four extra bands per mount).
Available from many online retailers as well as an authorized ebay merchant.

i use windtech "rubber band" mounts that are like $5 each
they are a snug fit but work great
also worked good with 39x\
http://www.fullcompass.com/product/340811.html 30 isn't the right size but it shows you what they look like
they come in 20, 25, 30 and ui think the 480s are 22 so i use the 20s

Cool design! for $8 you can't go wrong. Have you ever had any problems with them sagging?

I use Rode SM4 shockmounts but they were like $50 a piece. Nice snug fit with 460/480 bodies. Wish I would have seen the ones above and saved myself some cheese.

I'd like to second the Avantone mounts.  Best tip I got with them was to remove the two extra bands per side.  Flipp knows what he's talking about.

nope, no probs ever
the only thing i ever thought of was because they are tight, that i might mark the body sliding it in or out
not that most bodies don't get marked up in the field at some point, but i know some people are concerned more then other on it

i got mine at Sweetwater and have seen them at B+H and ebay too
sometimes called windtech sometimes olsen audio sometimes just a genaric name

I was using the Peluso shock mounts that came with the CEMC6s until I sold them.  Now I'm using Shure A53s and I'm very happy with them -- they are a little snug but they're very compact, provide good isolation, are reasonably priced, and the torque required to get the 480s settled into them has definitely enhanced my upper body strength.  8)

many of us use the superlux hm32.  they aren't built like a tank but I'm still on my first pair ;)

http://www.superlux.us/smalldiaphragm.html

damn looks like they are about $17 each now!  I think they were like $8-10 each when I got them.  looks like the hm 30 is $9.  never used them though.

those Avantone mounts look real nice though!

got the Avantone mounts yesterday and i love them. they're great, especially for the price.

only problem is that they don't seem to go ALL the way vertical (i've got some a61 swivels on the way). not a huge deal though, since i can just make the adjustment on the mics.

great tip on taking off the extra elastics, too! the mics are plenty snug (even vertical) with just the bottom 2 in there.

thanks again everyone! +t's all around.

2 480's, 2 avantones, and a shure bar is kinda heavy for clamping, but not at the top of your stand.

i have clamped a akg tbar, 480s and the windtech mounts with no probs

the vert bar and at mounts are much heavier then a lot of stuff you can use
the only plus imo to a vert bar is the ease of changing setups
the mounts the only real plus imo is taking them in and out fast and easy whereas the windtech you could scuff them up easier, but shock protection - i think they do a great job

yea I've clamped with the 480's in superlux on a vert bar no problem.  as long as it's a beefy stand.  I wouldn't do it on my mini bogen.

I mentioned these in another thread. They are a bit pricey, but they are light and the bands are dirt cheap to replace if you need to ever replace them.

I guess I could make a shock mount with something like this:

http://www.proaudio.com/product_info.php?cPath=140_285_326&products_id=4908

and run it through the middle of one of these below and just use the factory clips to reduce weight.

The best will definitely be the new Rycote INV-7 from their new "InVision" studio range.

Will take any SDC from 19mm to 25mm in diameter.

Not only are they virtually unbreakable - they are technically better than most manufacturer mounts - and at a price you will be surprised at (ie: very low).  ;D

In the shops soon - I am definitely going to change all my SDC shockmounts for this new range.  ;D

My only complaint to those John is that they are freaking HUGE footprint!   For the same size or a bit smaller i'd go with the 8410's.

It depends on what is more important to you - small size or effective shockmounting.

In tests so far, the Rycote outperform everything else as far as I am aware.

Agreed but is there such a thing as overkill?

Actually - in the flesh they are quite unobtrusive - a lot more so than most other shockmounts I have seen.

And if you have a smaller mic. - the smaller ones are quite tiny.

John +T for those Mounts... Senn was supposed to have their shock mounts for the mkh8000 but I can't seem to find them. What is the part number or the product code for those... I don't run the ext cables I use the xlr but I'm sure they sell the 19mm holder for the back as well...

Ok found it its the invision inv-3

Nice any Idea how much they cost?

Thanks again!

don't have the remote cables yet

supposed to be here late jan/early feb and that time has passed and I haven't gotten a good answer on when they will arrive :(

if those are indeed the remote cables in that pic, it looks like they won't fit in a schoeps kwon bar

anyone have any good pics of the neumann or mbho know bars? :)

I will try and find out from Rycote - I think about half of what the Sennheiser shockmount is.

Senn was supposed to have their shock mounts for the mkh8000 but I can't seem to find them. What is the part number or the product code for those...
MZS 8000 - Art. No. 502330 - UK price is £60.00 +VAT - UK MKH 8000 price list is on the Sennheiser UK site HERE.

I have that mount on order. It is currently backordered in the US until mid April.

I have just found out the price of the new Rycote mounts.

In the UK they will retail for £30 +VAT

In the USA the likely price will be $79.

All the In-Vision mounts (INV-1 to INV-8 inclusive) will be the same price.

Also - for info.  This was posted on a UK Forum by a Beta Tester of the mounts:-

I've also been beta testing these Rycote In-Vision mounts (and I'm very pleased to say that one of my suggestions has been implemented in the production version).

The design is as stunningly ingenious as it is innovative and unique -- and it can be scaled very easily to match a wide variety of mic sizes and weights. The basic design has already been proven in the S-series shockmount and windshield system for location sound applications.

More to the point - I've seen the vibration measurement plots, and these mounts provide very good attenuation/isolation down to around 30Hz in most cases, which is significantly better than a lot of manufacturer's mounts.

The mount also includes an extremely effective cable clamp that ensures the performance is maintained regardless of cable type in use.

In the few cases where the In-Vision design fails to exceed the performance of the manufacturers' own mounts, they still have a significant advantage in that they cost a fraction of the price! The way they are made is very simple, which keeps the cost very low indeed, and the material used is virtually indestructible too. No rubber bands or elastic cords to replace. No adjustments necessary.

The first release of the range is intended for miniature and compact mics, plus most capacitor pencil mics. There are eight models and you can see the specs here.

There are three for miniature mics, three for compact mics, and two for longer, larger pencil mics. The design is optimised for end-fire mics, and as a result the performance is not quite as good for side-address figure-eight mics -- although it is still better than every other commercial mount out there. I believe there is also a design on the drawing board for a version optimised for fig-8s, but the potential sales would be so small that it is not high on the production priority list at the moment.

Later this year there will be a larger design using the same principle but in very different way to support side address large diaphragm mics. That will be exciting...

I really do believe these Rycote studio shockmounts are going to become standard equipment for everyone within a few years. They are that effective and cost-effective. Like John, my order for enough to service all my small diaphragm mics is already lodged with Rycote!
