well, that message says it is audio capable......but it also says it is: "Internal and SCSI." which it is obviously an external, judging by that picture.
I would confirm it's audio capability with this link:
http://www.ncf.ca/~aa571/datfaq.htm (http://www.ncf.ca/~aa571/datfaq.htm)
as far as a scsi card....i use an Adaptec 2940AU....readily available on ebay.
the external connection on the above card is a HD 50 pin male (HD=high density) (scsi 2)
The internal connection (on top) is for a internal drive(which you don't have) and it is for an internal ribbon connection.
Those connections on the back of your dds drive are regular 50 pin female (scsi 1), not HD. so you will need a 50 pin male > HD 50 pin male to connect to the 2940AU.......you will also need a terminator plug for the output on the back of the dds that you do not use. (this is needed for the drive to function properly.) you can find this cable on ebay as well......but i found a good deal on one here:
http://www.acortech.com/.sc/ms/dd/EN/966358/nc/Cable%20^2F%20Accessories--SCSI%20^2F%20IDE%20^2F%20Floppy%20Cable/207/SCSI%201%20TO%20SCSI%202%20CABLE%20%28%20UL%20%29%20 (http://www.acortech.com/.sc/ms/dd/EN/966358/nc/Cable%20^2F%20Accessories--SCSI%20^2F%20IDE%20^2F%20Floppy%20Cable/207/SCSI%201%20TO%20SCSI%202%20CABLE%20%28%20UL%20%29%20)
I feel like Nick Burns after that reply:

thanks for taking the time Joe +T
I checked the firmware, it is audio capable...
and the unit is definitely external...

no sweat. +T to you ........nothing like transfering a 90m in an hour. :)

Nothing like transferring a 3hr show in < 5 minutes (a la JB3). ;D Though up til I got my JB3, I kindca wish I'd pursued a PC DAT drive for transfers. Good stuff here - info, pics, etc.

You're welcome!!!!

or no transfer at all. :) having a lappy is great.
One last thing Macdaddy, although i'm sure you'll find out in your research, but that little black switch (to the left in the picture, beside the two scsi1 outputs) has to be switched to 0, 2 or 7 i believe. i use 0
-
Oh god, not 7. 7 is your host adapter (scsi card). Any number other than between 0 & 6 will work fine, provided this is the only device on the SCSI bus.
-
my apologies, you are correct mirth.....not 7. 0,2, or 5. or make sure it is the only thing on the controller.
From the dds holy grail:
How do I use the file to update the drive?
Select the file that most closely corresponds to your drive and download it by clicking on the drive picture.
Create a bootable diskette.
Execute the downloaded file and unzip the files to the bootable diskette.
Copy the ASPI driver that is appropriate for your SCSI card to the diskette and update the DEVICE= line for the file in the CONFIG.SYS
Set the SCSI id on your drive to 0, 2 or 5, or make sure your drive is
the only device attached to the controler.
Make sure no tape is inserted in the drive
Boot with the diskette
Follow the instructions of the firmware update program

thanks again for all the help - I read all that stuff before I bought the drive. I think the appropriate firmware is installed, so hopefully all I have to do is plug the sh*t in and go, I think. I wanted to make sure I was getting the correct card and cable...
Then just command-line it with that Dat > WAV program, right..?

did I post in the wrong forum..? I thought "Ask the Tapers" was the appropriate place - if I thought wrong, please move the thread. Sorry.

no, Damon's referring to the computer guy sketch from SNL. This or the computer recording forum is fine. Maybe the computer recording board just because its computer-related but I think you're safe from our power-lusting moderators.... ( :-* moke!)

I have this card sitting arounf collecting dust...let me know if you could use it.

thanks alot!!!
if this PCI card will suit my needs and it looks like it does), I absolutely would want it.
but the card you have is 68 pin, and the drive is 50... do they make a cable that will terminate properly on both ends - like this one (http://www.acortech.com/.sc/ms/dd/1076035732359315/966358/nc--%5E202http%5E3A%5E2F%5E2Fwww%5E2Etaperssection%5E2Ecom%5E2Fyabbse%5E2Findex%5E2Ephp%5E3Fboard%5E3D23%5E3Baction%5E3Ddisplay%5E3Bthreadid%5E3D13491%5E3Bstart%5E3D0/Cable%20%5E2F%20Accessories--SCSI%20%5E2F%20IDE%20%5E2F%20Floppy%20Cable/212/SCSI%201%20TO%20SCSI%203%20CABLE%20%28%20UL%20%29%20)..?
Do you still have my addy..?
now all I need is a cable...
-
you should be able to find a HD 68 pin male (scsi2) to 50 pin male (scsi 1)

I think you missed this link in my previous post...
would this cable work with the card and drive listed above..?

yes. that is the correct cable.
-
Yer gonna need an external terminator to stick on that drive too. If you want I could prolly hook one up.
-
BlueDevil - if you still want to get rid of that card, I will buy the cable now...
-
last questuion (I hope)...
I need a terminator, correct..?
are they all standard 50 pin male, or do I have to get something special..?
thanks again for all the help.
-
good to see Joe helping others with their DDS drives :) never thought we'd get yours working
FWIW, i bought an external drive and just pulled it out of the case and put it inside my PC. Saved me a hassle as far as cables and terminators were concerned.. but i have yet to get a 5.25" bay adapter so it's just kinda loose in my PC.
once you have it installed, and audio firmware flashed, and DAT2WAV installed, if you have a problem identifying it i have a script i can send you that will step thru all the IDs until it finds it.
i never got VDAT to work but you might want to check it out - it's got a GUI interface that some people like much better than DAT2WAV.
-

me either....but i never did get dat2wav to id the drive. i just bought an internal that i'm gonna run external.....and you have an external that you are running internal! :o

nothing special, a 50 pin male terminator will do.
-
dat2wav seems my style...
I use shntool all the time, and refuse to use anything but the command-line of md5sum, so I assume dat2wav should work OK...
but you will be the first to know if something does not work ;)
-
joe did you get the external drive bay yet? mine is just sitting around, i would let you have it for shipping.

VDAT kicks major ass. It is twice as expensive as DAT2WAV though.

external drive bay?? I assume you mean a bay that will hold an internal drive externally? Thanks for the offer, once i figure out what it is, i'll take it. ;D

sounded like you were going to run your DDS drive externally, i was talking about the enclosure for it... my DDS drive came that way, and the enclosure (w/ Power supply) is just sitting in the basement.
-
yeah, i could use that. that will allow an internal to be run external, correct?
Thanks and +T 8)
