In the market for an Interface with pre amp
« on: September 04, 2007, 12:36:33 PM »
Hey Everyone

I am in need of some expertise.  I am looking for an interface with preamps.  I have been looking at several models and really am having a hard time finding what I want.

I need an interface with preamps, Phantom Power, Spidif hookup, 24/96.  Now here comes the tricky part USB or Fire Wire? Fire wire is faster but is it really necessary?

I am going to be running 2 condenser mics phantom power from the interface with a Microtrack.  Here are some models I have been looking at.

Pre Sound FireBox - 6x10 24-bit/96K http://www.presonus.com/firebox.html

M-Audio Fire wire 410  http://www.sonicsense.com/maudio410.htm

Edirol UA-25 this edrol does not have spidif

Are there any other models out there that might fit my criteria and do the same thing for under $500

Thanks for the help

A few things to keep in mind:

1) The Presonus FireBox is not truly a 96k box: http://taperssection.com/index.php?PHPSESSID=547bd5c3ce7f21d844098263ac280883&topic=88883.0

2) If you're planning on rolling at 96k, you want Firewire; USB 2.0 is not stable/reliable above 48khz.

3) the pre-amps in most interfaces suck (at least for those in your price range)

I'd recommend the MOTU Ultralite, and then you can see about getting a pre-amp mod/upgrade for it down the road (Busman Audio is a candidate here).

Thanks for the suggestion

How do the two Mic plugins work?  I mean one is on the front and one is one the back.  It would seem a little cumbersome if I were to have it bag out in the feild.  I would almost need to keep it out wheil recording otherwise I would not be able to see the screen.  Maybee thats being a little picky?

Thanks for all the help this really gives me a better idea of what is out there.

Hey Everyone

[rest deleted]

FWIW I don't know if I'm the only one, but whenever I see a post from you, I have to automatically move on without reading whatever you have to say or contribute simply because I find your avatar to be incredibly violently reprehensibly revolting, regardless of whatever it is you're trying to convey with the message underneath.

I know you probably don't care about my unsolicited message, but that's the effect it has on me anyway...FWIW.

Hey thanks everyone for the posts.  I appreciate all the positive help.  Now I know what not to buy.

I think that I might go with the M-Audio Firewire 410.  I will let you all know how it works.

tonedeaf,

have you seen the movie Officespace?

that's what the avatar is from, and it's a dude beating the crap out of a frustrating copier/printer.
classic movie.

Yeah I PM'd him about the movie.   It does look violent if you have not seen it.

I can not trace any reference on firewire 410 that it will work in stand alone mode. Check this before you purchase.

M-audio fast track pro works stand alone mode, but the spif will be 24bit/48khz in that case.

Perhaps Apogee MiniMe w firewire interface --
http://www.apogeedigital.com/products/minime.php

It's been discontinued -- but used ones (usually with or without USB card)
show up in the yard sale pretty often.  You would have to update to firewire.
