Tascam DR-2d "Best Practices" ?
« on: July 10, 2013, 04:09:51 PM »
I know Best Practices is largely subjective but I would love some guidance here.

Mainly looking for DR-2D configuration advise.

Currently I use mine in the following configurations:

Outdoor Rock show:
Stealth: CSC > DR-2D (FOB)
              Input level typically 90% on MicIn
              Gain set to MID
              Low Cutoff 120Hz

Non-stealth: CSC > DR-2D (FOB)
              Input level typically 90% on MicIn
              Gain set to MID
              SBD on LineIn typically set 90%
              Low Cutoff 120Hz
              Dual Mode is LINE (not MIX)

Indoor Rock show
(I havent had the opportunity to use the DR-2D indoors so this config is based on my D8 days)
Stealth: CSB > Sony D8 15-20ft from stack
              Input level to Auto on LineIn

I just  purchased a Oktava MK-319 and am having it modded once I receive it. If I like the way it sounds I will buy another and run them in a pair.
Stealthing I will probably continue with CSC or maybe switch back to CSB.

Can anyone recommend any improvements to the way the DR-2D configured?

I'd like to also get other people in different configurations and their Best Practices for those as well.

thanks in advance

without reading your whole post, I would STEER AWAY from using a low cut filter ;) You can always use an HPF in post and its always harder to "add lowend, than to "take it away" ;)
Schoeps MK 4V & MK 41V ->
Schoeps 250|0 KCY's (x2) ->
Naiant +60v|Low Noise PFA's (x2) ->
DarkTrain Right Angle Stubby XLR's (x3) ->
Sound Devices MixPre-6 & MixPre-3

If you do a search there is a great dr2d thread to follow up on.

My set up is either CA14s (stealth), or Busman bsc1 (open), powered by a Naiant Tinybox, then into the dr2d.
I would suggest using the line in if possible, and the line in should be set at 95 or higher, then gain adjusted with the preamp.
For mic in, set at 67 or higher and adjust gain with the preamp.

GAIN on the recorder should be set to LOW. If you're recording at 24 bits you can boost it in post production, and have less chance of clipping.
Turn off the Low Pass, and do it in post if you need to.

For 4 channel (aud and SBD)
Mode should be LINE.
I connect the Line in at 95 to the SBD
Connect mic input anywhere from 67 on upward controlling gain with the preamp.

If you aren't running a preamp and just have a bettery box or something you should still be fine with mic in at 67 and line in at 95. If you're worried about spiking level, I would that if you have the line in at 95 and use the line in instead of mic in you will be fine. Make sure the gain setting on the recorder is set to LOW.

Good luck.

Thanks for the suggestions!

I see the other DR-2D thread but it seems to be a 'catch-all' I wanted to get peoples opinions on what their recommendations are on particular setups.
