Title: Opinions? AKG 463 (Jim Williams mod) > UA-5 (warm or presence?)
Post by: §†∑∫åµÞ≥¥ on March 12, 2004, 12:18:13 PM
Anyone ever heard or ran this set-up? I really love the sound I get on the mod'd 463's and am looking for something to run behind it. I've ran 463>MME a couple times and think it's great but with all the warranty and service issues with Apogee I'd rather save the headache if I can get a similar (and cheaper) result with the UA-5. I just sold my DMIC-20 and need something to phantom power my mics -- will the UA-5 accomplish this as well? Thanks in advance.

The UA-5 does have phantom power.

i'd say warm mod, but i don't know, i like my 391's going through the wmod ua-5, of course i'd like to upgrade to modded 463's sometime, but i like what i'm getting now. i think most people would say wmod over the presence mod, but who knows..

only heard one show, but I like the 483>warm ua5 combo. I've never been to the Moon, but I think Doug mentioned it is not a great sounding venue...however this combo delivers nicely. You can get one for what, 500 or so including the mod? Pretty nice price, and set up for future 24 bit taboot.

I'm checking into the same combo with the 460's.

I know the w-mod tapes sound really good, but I would lie to try the p-mod out and see what the results are. There are some shows with 460(jwmod)>p-modua-5 on archive, but I cant listen cuz I have no dl abilities...here's a lionk to a thread from the other day

Yep, thanks. I dl'd 2 of the moe. tracks (461 > pmod) and IMO they sound very nice. I'd really like to compare the pmod to the wmod and see which sounds best with my mics. I wonder if Oade rents them?  :hmmm:

borrow some preamps from some people if possible and see what you like, but im sure the ua5 would sound great behind them.  Also another thought would be the V3

I ran those into a pmod once... it's an STS9 show on archive.org (3/31/04, I think) if you wanna check it out.

Just to throw another perspective out there.... I've been running 480s -> MME for over 2 years without any physical issues with my MME.  I've had some driver issues on my laptop but the minime itself has given me no trouble. It hasn't blown up, I haven't heard static when adjusting gain (although I do tape pretty much only loud concerts) and the ergonomic issues are not a problem if you mount it into a rack to protect the XLR ins and recess the gain knobs.  Pretty much any of the 'typical' complaints we hear around here I have not experienced.

my .02 but YMMV

That said, if "cheaper" is the more important point in the above message then you probably can't go wrong with any of the oade mods.

I know you are looking for the mics to be 460's but Doug has some other mics that were used for W and P and T comps.   It might help a bit in hearing the difference of the ua5 mods...they are flacs...hope this helps

Hi All, thought I'd chime in here on this subject seeing how I've ran the combo
(JW Mod) AKG 460's > P-Mod UA-5  for about a little over a year now, I did
really like the results I got, but on some shows I thought (to my ears) it was
a tad bright for some bands, The PMod has a very clear upfront sound to it,
really did help sometimes at not so loud shows, but since the JW mod is
already a presence mod to the mics, I thought I'd try running something
different for awhile...I will be trying out 460's > T-Mod+ here on 4/20 at
MMW show...I'll hook anyone up with this source to hear what it sounds
like, I wanted to go with the transparent mod to let the true sound of the
modded 460's shine through. If you want more sources to check out on the
archives do a search for my name KCMoeJoe, should turn up alot of diff. shows.
bottom line any of the mods to the UA-5 should sound great with the 460's.
just different flavors, nice thing is Doug will convert it down the road for about
$100.00 bucks - nice to have options!  ;D

Have you considered the Transparency MOD? Reading the description of this mod seems the most consistant with intention of the mod'd 460's... neutrality & transparency. I have a pair of JW mod'd 460's, but don't know alot about the UA-5, so I'm out on a limb here.

i'm a fan of my 461/3s > w mod. they are not JW mod mics though. i'm struggling with deciding if i want to move to mod 461/3 >w mod ua5, 461/3 > v3,  or ck61/3 > jk labs...decisions decisions..

i think i have decided to go with the T mod for my mod463's.

i think you basically cant go wrong with the UA-5 mods, but it would be interesting to tape a show and compare all 3 in one show

AKG 4xx->minime IMO.  I would not base your decision on service issues with Apogee (and what is the warrant issue you mention?). -Charlies
