Title: SAMPLE: SP-CMC-4U with SP-low-sens MOD/12V bbox/R-09(mic-in)
Post by: Arni99 on July 01, 2007, 04:50:17 AM
same song:
1.)unedited WAV(16bit 44.1kHz)=>FLAC:
http://www.file-upload.net/download-320022/R09_000303.flac.html

2.)unedited WAV(16bit 44.1kHz)=>mp3 128kbit/s:
http://www.file-upload.net/download-320003/R09_000302.mp3.html

SP-CMC-4U =>12V bbox=>R-09 MIC-IN/ rec. level 20
(mic sens: low/AGC: off/external mic: stereo/low-cut: OFF)

Line-in would have resulted in a too low level....rec-level 30 would have been not sufficient and an external preamp is a MUST for line-in with the modded SP-CMC-4Us also for loud amplified rock-shows.
So the MOD reduces the output of the mics considerably as expected ;).
Really loud shows shouldn´t be a problem even standing close to the stacks.
My distance was about 15 meters(45 feet).

I'm at work right now, so can't listen to the samples which I'm dying to hear :)  Was the mic-in powered? I mean, the 3 volts out of the mic in + the battery box would give 15 volts, which is a bit too much IMHO? Or was the mic-in Plug in power disabled on the R-09?

NO, plugin-power was NOT active.
Tested plugin-power+12V bbox at home and the result was a decrease and the SAME levels as using LINE-IN.
3V plugin + 12V bbox seems to reduce the level with a further -10db on mic-in and the signal was at -20db on the levelmeter...same -20dB level for line-in for the same sound-track played on my home stereo.

so EITHER plugin-power OR external bbox should be used BUT never BOTH at the same time.

Yes, it is the BB or plug-in; never both.  I am using my identical mics with the same mod and it works with about the same levels as the MM-HLSC-1's (Sennheiser) and gives me good levels.  I record line-in through a Soundman A-3 BB and at 20/30 on the RH1 which gives me ~10dB of headroom, which is what I like.  I like the 4U's; they are warmer than the Sennheisers.  I am going to bed now but have three hours to do post on tomorrow.  I just downloaded Samplitude V8 SE and will see what I can do with that.

I will be using Samplitude as my workstation with the SD 722/Schoeps CMC64 combo when it arrives.  About 10 days from now.  Woohoo!!   8)

My understanding is that any mic with this mod should be used with a pre amp. A bb is not enough. Plus, to my ears, the Rec input is way too noisy. I'd go with a pre amp and Line input all the way. File sounds great, but IMO would sound even better using Line In. ;)

As 100% stealth-taper I avoid using preamps ;).
Perhaps I will go for the small SP-PREAMP-11 sometimes...the smallest of all preamps ;).

I do not know how it is supposed to be used, but it works just fine for me through line-in on my Hi-MD and I assume it would be the same on any gear.  YMMV

the R09 accepts higher levels WITHOUT preamp-distortion on MIC-in than (HI)-MD .
thus it´s no problem to record loud amplified rockshows on mic-in.
With a normal sens mic as the HLSC or unmodded SP-mics line-in would have been possible but not with this low-sens-modded SP-CMC-4U mic, because max. gain of 30(lots of preamp noise) wouldn´t have been sufficient on line-in to reach upper levelmeter ranges(-6db).
I´m, totally satisfied with the mic-in results ;).
of course we are all conditioned using LINE-in +bbox for loud stuff from our MD-experiences ;).
That changed with the r09.
SO why take "big" preamps to a stealth show when they are really not needed?
The noise on my sample from gain 20 on mic-in is NOT audible on my stereo.
For silent stuff I use my MM-HLSO omni which has standard sensitivity...about +12dB HOTTER than the modded, of ocurse also on mic-in.

Arni,
Friend, there is no criticism in my words at all ;D. The file sounds great. It's just that I've been using the R-09 for quite some time and I can tell the diference between Rec and Line inputs in a heartbeat. To my ears, the Line In sounds always cleaner. You know, I'm a 100% stealth taper too and therefore not a huge fan of lots of pieces of gear.
Are you using the 24/48.000 set up? I assume so.
Take care ;D

chris, what are the technical details for your mini-preamp?
I see a 9V battery is used but which gain range etc.?
thx

I have never made that one yet.. But I am working on it. I did make a simple battery box from a cell phone.

I dont want to hijack this thread with sales BS.. so Check out retail space for the st-ugly preamp :)
