i assume you want a pair.
:)

a used pair of dpa 406x would be awesome, but likely a bit more expensive than you want.

otherwise, go directly to Church Audio.
he's on this board.  look in the retail section

I already have a preamp

AT933/943/853 / MM / Church Audio

The MM HLSC-1 are 500 dollars, the others are cheaper.

Unless I'm very much mistaken (as I often am), there's a bit of a gap price wise between these and the DPAs, with no mics in it.

Edit: you'll need the mics you buy modded to mini-XLRs to go with your preamp.

I think they would, but both are very fine mics. To upgrade any higher would be to go to DPA's, but those new would be out of the $500 budget, but you may find a pair used for that amount or less.

I think you have very limited options for a real upgrade from the U853s at $500 or less.  Maybe Sennheiser MKE2 ominis or the Microphone Madness version of the same.  The problem is that almost all of the mics that sound significantly better than the U853s (I'd classify the HLSC-1 and the Church Audio cards as lateral moves at best) require phantom power, which would mean a new preamp as well.

If I were you, I'd maybe get a set of omni or subcardioid capsules for the U853s that will give a more open, natural sound when acoustics are favorable and then save up until I had the $$$ for a phantom power solution and some significantly better mics like Neumann or MilLab actives or MAYBE Audix Micros.  Other than the DPA 406xs, I can't think of stealthable alternatives that sound substantially better than the U853s until you move up into that price range.

A used pair of DPA 4061's can be had for <$500. Just gotta be patient and look around often
DPA 4061's > CA-9100>(3wire)>R-09HR
SPCMC4(AT853's)>CA-9100(3wire)>R-09HR

Does the MM HLSC-1 pair terminate into a single 3.5mm plug?

While you can "get by" with a 3 wire bb or one of the mods to the mics... To get the full impact of the u853s you need phantom power. thats how they were designed. More specifically the at phantom modules... But a phantom unit by one of the other companies will work fine. I use a ps-2 but i believe there are a few other portables.
