Title: dpa 402x owners - what do you store your mics in?
Post by: scb on December 01, 2010, 10:24:59 PM
similar schoeps thread was just posted, but I have a slightly different question

I've always kept my dpas in the hard case they came in, which offers great protection but also means they take up a ton of space, especially when running 4 channels when I need to bring 4 hard cases.  what do dpa 402x owners here carry/store your mics in? I'm looking for a much smaller solution than what I currently have

I have a thick touque that holds everything and that is stuffed inside a freezer bag.  The spooled cables and caps sit in the touque with bandanas stuffed in as filler to keep the caps from rubbing each other or the ORTF bar.  The freezer bag keeps it all dry and padding is enough that inside my mountainsmith bag the mics are well protected from getting banged around.

This is my Schoeps but would apply to the 402x as well.

Pelican 1050, DPA windscreens over mk4v > KCY.  also holds a kwon bar and shure donught

For shows:
XLR end: wrapped in pipe foam and secured with zip ties
Cables: paired together with a small piece of gaffers tape every ~ 18 inches
Capsule end:  capsule > DUA0020 windscreens > 35 mm plastic film cannister > lid secured. (lid has been notched to the center with a dremel to accomodate the exiting cable)
The works then are coiled and placed in my PB RM multi

For extended storage, they go back into the plexi glass storage deals then to the DPA gun case.

I never did chime in on this...

Mine stay in the DPA hard case at all times.

I realize it's not as small as I'd ultimately like, but it is small enough, and I just feel better with them being protected in the hard shell case that was designed to protect and store them.  Only issue is it makes setup/teardown a tiny bit cumbersome, but not terrible by any means.

I'm able to fit my rig, plus Tekkeon/Cables/one clamp/small pouch of accessories all in a small Sonicase.  Basically everything I need.

I haven't needed to consider a smaller storage option for the mics seeing everything fits fine in the small bag, which achieves my goal of carrying a low profile rig tight and compact.

mine go in the hard cases when I fly.  otherwise they stay connected on the kwon bars with windscreens over them stored in a petrol bag wrapped up.  it makes it ten times easier when it comes to being able to set up in less than 1 minute

Makes perfect sense for 1 min set up/tear down.

I am usually set up/tore down in 4-5 mins taking my time, packing everything nicely so I am set for the ride.  At some point I'm sure I will need to go in ready to fly like that, but I haven't had the need to yet.

It's also definitely me being a bit anal about having them stored nicely in the DPA cases, with the capsules disconnected and stored.

As far as storage goes, as opposed to prepped for use before a show, are there any theories behind the capsules being disconnected?  I suppose there would be less wear and tear by disconnecting less often, but could it be beneficial to give the connection a break by keeping the capsule free?  I just assumed so seeing the case is designed for the caps to be disconnected.

While traveling to and from shows I keep my mics in their windscreens for protection.    If the mics are at home for a few days, I'll take them out of their windscreens for storage in the dpa boxes.
