Nomad Jukebox 3 - what's needed? Stealth...
« on: August 30, 2003, 09:01:59 AM »
Hey there,

This post refers to stealth taping...

Just a quick one I hope - let's assume I have my microphones and a suitable recording device (again, a whole new topic)...

Are there any battery boxes (specifically suited for NJB3 if possible) that power the mics and also act as a pre-amp?  I hope I am not making a fool of myself for asking this question as I have not taped 1 second of anything yet, so forgive my ignorance please.

Or, do I need mics > battery box > ??? > NJB3

If so, what would that ??? be....

I would appreciate any detailed replies that could offer a suggested "rig" suitable for the NJB3.  Or direction to a URL that shows pictures or text of how it works, etc.

Regards,

There's a yahoo group that may be of help to you - njb3tapers.

That being said, I know of quite a few people that are running Mics->batt box -> JB3.  I tried that for a while, then decided to get an outboard preamp+a/d.  The AD-20, as suggested by zhianosatch.  It's a great unit, definitely stealthable.  The only problem is that you'd be going mics->batt box->ad-20->jb3.   A lot of little pieces.  I, personally, found that frustrating.  But I also wasn't stealthing and trying to sneak gear in.

I'm not sure what kind of mics you are running, but Sound professionals does make a battery box with a preamp built-in, and they also have a preamp that provides plug-in power. I actually ran their version of at853->analog preamp(w/ plug-in power)->jb3 with good results. I found that I wanted bass rolloff, though, which meant ditching that preamp and getting the AD-20.  I believe it's pretty well accepted that the AD-20 has a better A/D converter than the one built-in the JB3, but the internal one really isn't that bad.

Yeah, sorry for the random mass of information. Hopefully some of it helped.

J

I run the SP at853 > batt. box (with roll-off) > jb3 and have made several great sounding tapes....

like anything else, it depends on the venue and where you are within it.....

pretty stealthy though!

the few at831 > BB95 > attn -20dB > AD-20 > MD tapes that I have made have all turned out sweet,  all courtesy of armen.

if you get the AD-20, you'll definitely need the attenuators

I have an modified AD20 with an 1/8" in that provides power to the mics so you don't need a separate battery box.  Perfect for stealthing. ;)

SoundPro's sells one like it, but they charge a shitload of money for it...
