UA5...needs a mod before I can use?
« on: October 14, 2003, 07:36:27 PM »
So I can't just use it with my Oktava 012 and Sony MD? It needs to be mod before I can? or should I just go with a cheap phantom power unit then a AD-20 or something? Thanks guys, you all rock.

first issue:  I believe you need the digimod so you can go optical (digital) out to your MD, same goes for the JB3. someone correct me if I'm wrong, I'm just making an assumption from what I've been reading

second: you can't +T anyone yet until you get 50 posts ;)

you are correct, you need the digi mod to use as a standalone device... and for the money, imho this is where its at... with the right mod- be it warm or presence-

well, almost....the mod doesn't just enable the optical, it allows it to be used without a computer hooked up by usb, as caymanreview said, standalone.
both digi outs are available simultaneously i believe, regardless of how it is being run (usb connected or standalone).
these have gotten some great reviews, especially with the oade mods.  i am not yet certain of their status on being bit perfect however.
and if you want the oade mod you must buy the ua5 from oade, they will not mod other units.

I have heard that none of the Edirol units pass a bit-perfect digital signal.

The UA5 is not bit perfect if passed a digital signal.  If you're transferring DATs through the UA5 to CD, the UA5 resamples whether you're going from sample rate A to sample rate A or from A to B.  Doesn't matter.  However, for standalone use as a pre/ADC for taping - where we go analog in - the bit imperfectness is a moot point.
