Title: EQ'ing acoustic guitar
Post by: drumminj on January 27, 2004, 08:05:08 PM
Hey all.  Doing a little EQ on an acoustic show I'm matrixing.  The sbd mix was awfully thin and harsh, in my opinion.  I want to take the harshness out of the high end of the guitars if possible.  Can anyone suggest EQ settings to do so?  What freq and Q?

I figured I'd just guess and check, but if someone can give me a good starting point, that'd be great. I have a few EQ primers bookmarked, but those mostly deal with EQ'ing studio instruments, and don't take into consideration the effect the EQ will have on other instruments(vocals) in the mix.

ummm  i couldn't tell you frequencies, but get rid of some mids, and mid highs, they seem to be a little more harsh, mayber bring up lows a bit.  i was just eq'ing my guitar for an upcoming gig, but its different on tape...  good luck man.

Yeah, I already brought up the lows a bit in the recording to "fatten" things up.  It helped, but there's still a bit of a harshness up top.  I'll just play around.  The problem I always have is that I may be able to nail the frequency, but then figuring out the right Q, etc.

I know, I know, "what do your ears tell you"

Slight boost 250Hz-500hz(avoid boost at 200) for fullness.  10KHz-15Khz is the general range for brightness.  It might be wise to lower these.  These are rough guidelines for solo acoustic, ymmv.

Thanks.  Why is 200Hz bad?  Just too low/boomy?

It contains most of the clarity for the accousitc.  If you have control over a small bandwith around 200, try it out. You will see what I mean
