Binaurals or Cardoids?
« on: January 24, 2004, 12:39:54 AM »
since im just beginning my foray into taping, i recently purchased a D8 DAT recorder and was debating which type of mic to use.  Typically, i plan on taping rock/metal bands, most notably, Dream Theater and Metallica since theyre both touring soon.

since the venues are obviously different as are other variables, which style mics would work best?  i was leaning toward binaurals but i dont plan on mounting them and i dont want crowd noise coming out my ass either.  any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

A small portion of the wealth of info in the archive indicates that "binaural" is a technique using omnidirectional microphones. That cleared up, how much do you plan on spending?

normally I'd recommend cards for what you described, but since you sound bent on getting them from CS go with the omnis..........or cards.  Depends on where you plan on taping from.

I would recommend cards for most circumstances....At least that way, you will be able to reject some of the noise around you and when you are stealthing that is a must

SP-CMC-2 > SP-SPSB-1 > D8 is a nice small setup :)

however, a little box in between there would make it that much better :)

yeah - pass on the CSBs.  Way too much money for modified $5 panasonic capsules.

I'd second the at831 suggestion. Armen bought mine, Not sure who's using them now though. I only ran them 3 times but liked the sound for the price.

Just out of curiousity, I have the DPA 4060s, how do you make a real binaural recording? Do you stick em in your ears, and if so, what direction? Pointing into your ear canal, or pointing out? Won't they get all waxy and gross? Thanks!

as close to the ear as possible, ideally pointing out!

Schwilly used them regularly for a while and I ran them twice. Now they sit unused like the rest of my gear... what a sad dry spell...

if you get omni's you're gonna have to get close to the stacks, so count on that.  if you're set on core sounds, i'd suggest dynamic audio or giant squids, they're the same mic, different casing and a helluva lot cheaper - plus they look the same, so you could still technically lie to all your friends and say that you got the cs anyway.

Because nothing says "I have lots of money and am sort of confused as to how to spend it" like Bose.
