matrix recording? how?
« on: February 15, 2004, 08:44:09 PM »
can anyone tell me how to make a soundboard recording have good audience feedback?  i have made only one sbd recording thus far and it sounded like there was no one at the show. the only thing...all i have is a D8. is there way to set up an exterior mic and share input on the d8? i doubt that the next time i do a sbd. the sound guy will hang a mic from the ceiling and patch it into the sound board for me... any suggestions? can this be done withthe equipment i have? help please...

lots of info about this all over the site. just type in "matrix" and do a search.

this was the most recent thread discussing matrixing with the UA5, which is what you want, IMHO, as far as easy SBD/AUD Matrixes.

of course you could always do post-show matrixes using audio software like Soundforge or Cool Edit and two different recordings of the same show.

hey no worries.  the ua5 is definitely the easiest, and probably the cheapest, piece of gear to run a matrix on the fly at a show with.

if you are unfamiliar with the UA5 there is a plethera of info on this site about it.

also if you want to get a hold of rhys, you can always send a PM.  can never be too sure that he will see this thread.

Yep, UA-5 is very user friendly.
Definately buy it from the Oades though, so if you choose not to buy a it Modified already, you can still do so later down the line.
Truthfully, if your gonna save up, just wait alittle longer until you can purchase a Modified version(im talking about either the Presence or Warm Mod).

Grise- i have acopy of the Clutch show i can send ya, you can PM me your addy and ill get it out on tuesday...or if you BT, Its on Digital-Panic in flac format.  Its not that big so you can probably DL sooner than the Snail Mail would get to you.

ok...i'm a frugal bastard.....tell me what you guys think about this!!!!

typically i don't tape sbd...and UA-5 are expensive.... soo would this work??...??... How about buying a small portable mixer that can accept both mics and line in inputs....that way you can input the sbd into the line in and have a microphone set up....the hook the output to the d8 line in.

here's one on ebay for $30 which is 10% of a new UA-5.

that's alright!  the ebay item you posted seems ok, but doesn't have any XLR inputs from what i can tell.  unless you have mics that have 1/4" ends you'll need xlr inputs.  i would suggest something like this for you

Gris- I would definately consider this one that S_tl linked.  Even if your Sony Mic doesnt use the XLR, when you upgrade Mics, you'll want it then.

however.......i just remembered that this unit only operates on AC power so you would have to have a power source at the venue which doesn't happen in most situations. then again you can get one of those battery sleds that has a 2 prong connector on it.

anybody know of something similar to the one i posted that can be battery supplied in the field without costing that much?
