Can you guys steer me in the right direction insofar as DAT tapes are concerned?
What brands are good? Are there on-line stores with good deals?
:)
-
i'd say most audio grade DAT tapes are all good.
as for DDS tapes......I always go for maxells, you can get some great bulk deals at american-digital.com . To my knowledge, Sonic Sense still has the cheapest individual DDS tapes. don't quote me though. i'd check around.
-
what Brian said, I would definitely shop around... call and see if you can get price matching if you buy in bulk.
www.cascademedia.net is my favorite retailer
-
I only use HHB tapes now, had too many issues with DDS tapes in my trashcan

Any advice re: 60 versus 90?
-
60
don't use 90's in a portable unless you absolutely must. some people have good luck, some have bad luck... your safest bet is to avoid using 90s in your portables.
-
Thanks, Tim ~ 60s it is.
-
i run nothing but 90s in my portables, but i have heard of others having problems...

The only people I have seen having issues with 90's is in the sony portables, then again, I have seen people with sony's that never had a problem also. My tascam doesn't like the dds tapes, drops a lot of samples, some pops and what not through out the recording, hated it.

Never have problems with 90's in my Sony.
I stick with 60's as you should unless you're taping over two hours.
I've only ever run Maxell (DDS) or HHB (Audio)

Does anyone have any experience with TDK Prof. DAT Tapes?
Right now, they've got a good sale on them at the Tape Warehouse.
-
I have used them, they are solid

When i still had a D8 all I ever ran in it were Sony 90m DDS tapes (with the occasional Maxell 90m), and every so often the occasional 60m. Had it for years and never really had any problems (at least none that were related to head wear or problems from the use of 90m). I sent it in once a year to Paul at Pro-Dig for a cleaning and check-up. you can count me as one of the folks who always used DDS, of which the majority were 90m, and was a very happy camper. Now I use a JB3, so I dont sweat that particular detail anymore.

brad - good to see you up here again. See you at the Fillmore in 6 weeks or so.

I ran DDS exclusively as well, for about 7 years in a variety of decks (D8, M1, DAP1, HHB) with no real problems.
-
I run DDS (sony and maxells) 90M and a few 60s in my D100 with zero problems in 3 + years. I definitely understand the logic of why 90Ms are bad for small heads like the D100 has, but I have not had a problem. YMMV
