Monitor Recs
« on: October 26, 2003, 02:52:13 PM »
Well, the time has come for me to get a good set of monitors.  Can this be done for under a grand?  Can I get some specific suggestions?  Also, here is the key-  I want monitors that represent my sound as it is, not as it should be.  Hence, I would like monitors with as little coloration as possible.  It doesn't help me to work on mastering if i get the sound as it SHOULD be :-)

Check out the Tannoy's 600A.  You can always add a sub later...  But If you had more cash to drop look into their Ellipse 8...  They are the shit!

Mackie HR824 - a shy above $1000 but you won't get any better without going to Genelecs.  You can also get away with the HR624, but you'll definitely have to pair those up with a sub.  The HR824 pass enough lfe on the 8" cones without going to subs - but if you must the HRS120 will rattle the finish off the chrome...

Edit:  Each monitor is reference tested with the DPA Ref mic with a freq chart attached to each monitor.  What you capture is what you get, no colorization at all.  I shelfed my Tannoys b/c of these monitors, and now run 5 for 5.1 surround.

Keep your eyes open for a pair of Meyer HD-1 can be found used very reasonable and are widely used in pro studios.

i got some jbl's for now till i can afford the tannoy 600a's.  i listened to a pair the other day and man these things are incredible.  they reveal every single flaw immaginable.  they are the grace 101 of monitors.  i really dig em.

I'd say the Earthworks Sigma 6.2 (I think that's the #) monitors are awesome, as are the Tannoy Ellipse. Of course, both of these retail upwards of $3k.
Out of the game … for now?

I heard some of those Earthworks monitors- crystal in the high end, but almost brittle.  I wasn't exactly a fan, YMMV
