Title: MBHO Active Setup Question
Post by: DavidPuddy on November 28, 2018, 01:49:52 AM
I'm looking at eventually upgrading my starter rig to the setup below. Is this realistic or would I need IPAs or something along those lines in between the MP6? It looks like the MP6 supplies 48v via XLR.

MBHO 600 (hyper cap) > MBHO 603a (capsule adapter) > mini XLR to XLR cable > MP6

I don't want to shell out for the preamp bodies if this setup takes care of everything.

The MBHO 603A is a microphone that consists of the body and capsule adapter:

So you need one of the following:

You can't just run the capsule directly into the MP6. The capsule requires polarization voltage, not phantom power.

Since you'll be running a MP6 that can provide 48V phantom power, my suggestion is to get PFAs that will convert the phantom power to the proper mic polarization voltage.

Naiant will make you the proper PFA. Now what I'm wondering is if anyone is making the 4-pin mini-XLR cables required now that Darktrain is not making cables. I need to buy a longer pair for my setup, preferably snaked, if anyone is doing this....

Good idea. I didn't think to ask him. I guess all I need to specify is 4-pin mini-XLR right? There's no other special details those cables will require?

No, there's no black magic involved. Each pin on one end needs to be wired to the same pin on the other end.

nice. i just saw this thread now so i'm a bit late on chiming in, but i did the same exact thing about a year and a half ago. ka200n's > 603a cartridges > naiant ipas > mixpre-6 with cables made by ted/gakables. it's a great setup. don't see why anyone would spend the extra $700 on the mbho bodies unless you've really got a hangup about using all original manufacturer gear. it's too bad dale raised their prices on all mbho stuff though. i saved several hundred bucks by getting the mbho portion of the rig from them when i did.
