Cigar Caddy by Otterbox - Microphone storage
« on: March 19, 2008, 07:36:26 PM »
Stumbled upon this case on eBay a while back.  Finally bought one and it arrived today.  Paid just under $20.00 shipped.  Best storage option I've ever found for mics.  Takes up no room in the bag and offers crush-proof protection.  No humidor.  Just foam.

Dimensions:

Exterior  8.80"x 3.10"x 1.70"
Interior  7.88"x 1.97"x 1.17"

Mics pictured are Audio Technica AT3031's.  Their dimensions are 5.67" long, 0.83 (21mm) diameter

Wow, good find on this...
It's nice and small, too bad Pelican doesn't make one like this.

I just picked one up to check out, and noticed they also have 5 & 10 capacity boxes.

thanks for posting up the pics +T.

I've been looking for something like this myself, so thanks for posting!!

The closest in size I see for the Pelican's are the 1030
http://www.all-pelican-cases-4-less.com/detail_pelican_1030.html

Inside Dimensions (L,W,D):
6-1/2 x 2-3/4 x 2-1/16
Outside Dimensions (L,W,D):
7-1/2 x 3-7/8 x 2-7/16

Or here is their size comparison chart/link
http://www.cases4less.com/size_comparison.html

+T!

This looks like a nice smaller alternative to this, which is what I do currently.

http://taperssection.com/index.php/topic,78948.0.html

Is the material similar to the pelicans?  Easy to drill holes?  Nice find

Pelican 1060  ext.  9.37" x 5.56" x 2.62"
               int.   8.25" x 4.25" x 2.25"
cigar caddy    ext.  8.80"x 3.10"x 1.70"
                   int.   7.88"x 1.97"x 1.17"

Seems like it would fit?  It would be tight though.   :hmmm:

Thanks for the pointer to Otter Box for cigars, excellent similarity.

They seem nice for short 'pencil'-shaped mics.  But what about a little longer (albeit short) shotguns microphones?  They're in the range 9in-11in length, wouldn't fit into the Otter Box, neither Pelicans.  What are the alternatives?  I could only find these and a 9in shotgun wouldn't fit in.

My Otterbox showed up yesterday. It's great for the AKG 481. A little tight squeezing it shut (that won't hurt mics, will it?) but it's solid and small.

I got mine yesterday too.
It's very solid, and more importantly to me, small.

I too noticed that it's a bit tight, perhaps pushing the mics together when closed.  I think I'll just put a small cloth between/around them so any rubbing that happens doesn't result in scratches.

Yep, got mine on Monday.  Nice and snug on the Avantone CK1 bodies.  The foam makes a great pad around the mics.  Thanks again for the tip of the day  year

thinking of getting one for my 460 bodies... drill two littel holes at each end to pass my cables thru...

are the 460s the same size as the 480s?

Edit: sorry for the threadjack..... but aren't the 460s a bit beefier/thicker then the 480s?

If you're concerned about the tight fit with thw 2 cigar Otterbox then the 5 Cigar Otterbox is not that much larger but and provides plenty of room for "larger" 2 mics without them touching each other.  Still fits in the bag really nicely and still less than $20 including shipping!!

The 5 Cigar Otterbox would give you added lateral room between those two mics if you think that you need it,  for maybe a dollar or so more - the footprint for the 5 cigar otterbox is not that much bigger in your bag but it is big enough so that your mics aren't touching one another - that is the model that I got for my gefell mv692's - love it!

I just got the small 2 cigar box and it fits the Schoeps snug. I am thinking of cutting away some of the foam...its much better than lugging the Schoeps wood box, which takes more room in my bag and won't protect them if I drop it. Three cheers for the suggestion !!

Nice Dan.   +T

I'm rockn' the Pelican 1060 for my 460/61/63s.

I just scored a pair of ck8 short shotgun capsules, but it looks
like they're 215mm long - 8.645" - too long.

suggestions anyone?

do you guys keep your case sealed for long periods of time?
i open mine up when they are just sitting in the bag at home but is that needed? will they be ok if sealed for a month or so

I keep a silica gel pack in each of my pelican cases to absorb moisture.

I just got one too (eBay shop)... here's a pair of AT3032s

While the mics are close they don't touch and are wedged tight in place when you close the lid. The box is a lot heavier than I was expecting, good for protection, bad for weight :)

If you are concerned about the mics clashing in this model you could put a piece of tissue-box cardboard between them, though I can't see this is necessary.

FYI: The AT3032 mics are 21 mm (0.83") in diameter

If you are really concerned about the closeness of a larger diameter mic (21 mm) in a 2 spot box then the 5 spot box is the ticket!!!!  Only a few bucks more and PLENTY of space and not that much larger of a footprint...  Built like a tank!!

I am using the 5 spot boxes for my Gefell MV692's (25 mm) and they fit with PLENTY of room to spare in those boxes...

I got one of these otter boxes for my Neumann km184s and they fit great.  The mics nearly touch (like 2mm separating them) but enough separation that I feel fine about it.  Nice find!

Thanks for this thread, I went and purchased the double wide for my AKG480's.  They're a tight fit but work perfectly for taking to the show.  After the show I take them out of the case and store them in my Pelican case and leave the Otter case open so the foam doesn't get perma-squished.

Nice Dan.   +T

I'm rockn' the Pelican 1060 for my 460/61/63s.

I just scored a pair of ck8 short shotgun capsules, but it looks
like they're 215mm long - 8.645" - too long.

suggestions anyone?

I'm interested in same.  I could only come across the following:

Softi-Case for said with Rycote Softie:
http://www.alfacase.com/Softi-Case.html

Mic Tube small:
http://www.trewaudio.com/store/product.php?productid=806&cat=30&page=2

Proel BAG1500P MICrophone CARRY BAG PROE-BAG1500P (size not sure):
http://www.turnkey.co.uk/product/proel-1500p-microphone-carry-bag/

Any other box for short shotgun?

Alex

Here's my entry for shotgun travel. I have used this approach to store a flute headjoint as well.

This will be an appropriately sized section of PVC with two end caps. I will fit each end of the shotgun with a Windtech wind screen that is a snug fit into the PVC. The end caps stay on great with just a friction fit. [The PVC tube in the photo is from the flute headjoint project, haven't cut the one for the shotgun yet.

BTW, the mount for the shotgun is a bike grip ($6) with a 3/8-16 bolt running through it and into adapters on the AT8415. Certainly cheaper than the Rycote mounts and just as effective with the KTek bands.

I just joined team otter box.  8)

I ordered:

(1) 5 Stick Caddy 3400-20
(1) 2 Stick Caddy 3140-20

He honored that "Welcome New Customer" coupon for $10 off! Very cool!

I e-mailed him and told him I was shopping for best price and didn't need the cigar cutter or any of the extra's he throws in as I was using them to hold microphones. The shipped price he gave was better than anything I saw at any other site, including eBay.

+T's to the thread.

Trying to decide if I need the two or five stick size for the Avantone CK1s. I'm going low budget right now with an old check box with some nice foam padding inside and a fold in the middle to keep them separated.  ::) Not very sexy, but does the trick and easier to haul then the wooden boxes they came in. I believe the Avantone ck-1's are roughly the same size Ø as the 3032's
ck-1 = Ø 23mm // 3032 = Ø 21mm
so the two stick size Otterbox would fit them nicely
the mics are held firmly in place by the internal foam cushioning
I've been carrying them around with me the last few days while doing some location recording
and they haven't needed anything separating them

Perhaps for larger mics like the LDS2, you could get the appropriate diameter of PVC pipe and glue screw-on caps to the ends. Then put foam inside the pipe, and in goes the mic. Would only be a few bucks in material.

I am in for a 5-stick... Your Order Has Been Processed! from vintagechiccigar will either do the e70's with extra caps or the 4041's in here.

/edit
haha..

IMPORTANT: I have your note on the cutter and lighter – THANK YOU for letting me know!  I’ll pass this on to some “deserving cigar smoker”  Pb

Thanks again,

I got the 5 stick caddy and the improved foam padding that only has 3 grooves. The grooves are deeper and better fit my Naks. I didn't need the cigar cutter, so I gave it to an older friend who smokes smelly cigars for reasons only he knows.

What's the improved padding? Three grooves would be much better.

What Naks? I'm looking for something for the 300s.

I am also curious as to what you mean by new improved padding... thanks in advance

/edit

got mine from vintagechiccigars today.. the padding on the inside is junk. my at4041 mic's are not held in place whatsoever when the lid is shut. I am forced to put another layer of foam on top and bottom of the mics so they are held in place.. kind of a bummer.. whats this improved padding you talk of?
