And the best sounding mic at the AES '09 show goes to....
« on: October 11, 2009, 08:42:22 AM »
...(in my not so fuckin' humble opinion) Milab's DC-196.
Winner winner chicken dinner. Fabulous sounding mic at a $1400 price point, retail. I listened to about 50 mics...from Telefunken to Royers, to Schoeps, to AKG's...as well as all the chinese made junk from Studio Projects, Joe Meek, Cascade, etc. The Milab blew them all away. The only better sounding mic was a u87 at 5x the price.

oh
and spec here:
http://www.milabmic.com/showproduct.asp?id=1133&show=specs
to be clear about  how small these mics are
Quote
Length           145 mm
Diameter         27 mm

which for us American "English Unit" Metric challenged folks
that's about 5 3/4" length  X 1 3/16" diameter
darn small!

I'll have to read those reviews, but I can tell you that the mic is small. Not as small as say an AKG 460, but not nearly as big as a U87. Perfect for micing an acoustic guitar, a piano, or even for vocal tracking....or, for taper dorks...I could easily see two on a single stand. My new Swedish friend told me that there will soon be more capsule flavors for the VM44 series. He wouldn't confirm a figure 8 cap though....but I did ask  ;)

I've lusted over a pair of these for years.  When I heard this Over The Rhine (SBD + Milab DC-196 Blumlein stage-lip) recording on archive last year it pretty much sealed the deal.

I just wish that they would address their HORRIBLE mounting system for the VM-44 Links.  I truly hate it...

I had to read this, didn't I?  Dunno if it's a good thing or a bad thing that I don't have a spare $2500 right now.

$2138, shipped to your door if paid by check. 7-14 day lead time for arrival.
If anyone wants 'em, I can get 'em. this price is $200 lower than MAP price (lowest price you will see advertised). I've already sold one pair...the rest of you need to step up to the bat. The mics are the d00kie.
