Topic: DPA 406x questions

i am going to pick up a pair of dpa 4061's and have a few questions...

i will be running them xlr with phantom, so that means i need to put a $100 adaptor?

what sort of mounting system do y'all use?  will be running them OPEN, most likely on stage.

where is a good place to buy them, used?  new?  i've been looking on ebay, but don't really know what i need yet.

anything else i should know before i buy?

Just curious to why you want to run them with 48v phantom.  I don' believe they were originally intended to be run with that voltage were they?

The DPA 406n series runs off ~9 volts.  A battery box from DPA (expensive) or elsewhere will work.  This series most often comes with the microdot connectors so plan accordingly.  Used is dicey.  They could be burned out from stage work and not be up to spec.  The DPA XLR connector just converts the P48 to unbalanced 9 volt.

These are great mics.  They are omni so you would want to be as close as you can to your source if you want to eliminate the "room effect."

I love mine.  I would post a sample or two but the files are too big for TS.

If you run them with phantom power you need to use the $100 DAD6001 adapter for each channel. It converts the signal to balanced (for longer runs) and my guess is that it also contains electronics to protect the mics from being damaged.

I have an adapter and I measured the voltage from my mackie mixer with phantom on. The adapter converts the voltage down to something like 8 volts if I remember correctly.

Most tapers here have the microdot connector removed and have a pair rewired to use a tip/ring/sleeve miniplug for use with a small preamp. To power the mic they use a battery box which contains a 9v battery and some have bass rolloff.

Because I use a mixer my preference is to stick with the stock connector and use the XLR adapters.

I've gotta get some of those XLR adapters someday. Been thinking it might be fun to run my 4060's spaced apart at stage lip for a matrix.
