Looking to get new recorder.
« on: November 16, 2008, 04:22:12 AM »
Hi,
I am new to the list and have been taping with an M1 and DPA(4061)s for many years now.  The problem is that my M1 just died.  Rather than paying to have my M1 fixed I was wondering what people on the list thought would be a better option.  The two models I have been looking at are the Edirol R-09HR or the Sony PCM-D50.  Which of these is the best model for recording with DPA mics?  Also, does either model have optical or Spdf outs or ins?  I have a lot of DAT masters I would like to move over.  Please let me know what you think the best option would be.  I really want to mnaintain the quality of DAT without the headaches of tapes.
Thanks,
Ed

The D50 does have optical in and out.  Don't know about the Edirol.  The D50 is physically larger than the Edirol and costs more but it was designed well.  You used a Sony recorder before so you would take to it easily.  It has dedicated buttons and controls for all major functions.  I find it nice to have a wheel for level control instead of a button like most other recorders.  It also has SBM built in so if you have ever used one and want to stay in 16 bit you've got that option.  Battery life is great.  You'll get 12-15 hours of use from 4AA.

I own an R-09 and D50. I favor the D50 and also use to record with an M1, which I still have.
