Title: Microphone for wildlife setting
Post by: wiiawiwb on July 23, 2016, 08:47:29 AM
I am new to the world of sound recording and have a SONY PCM-M10 which I am looking to get a microphone(s) to go with. I will bring it with me when I backpack and will record night-time, wildlife sounds for personal pleasure.  The recorder and mic(s) will be left out at night and retrieved the next morning. People have mentioned that a low-noise microphone can be assembled using EM-172 capsules. I'm all thumbs so that is an option for me.

I'm looking for a mic for the M10 that isn't going to break the bank.  I'd prefer to buy something in stock rather than be made once an order is placed although I'd be willing to wait if the lead time is two weeks or less.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Here are examples using custom mics based on a long-time-ago patented method of capturing virtual reality audio in an easy consistent manner.

You can get a pair of lapel sized Omni mics from Naiant for about $60. I've never used them but I have been using Naiant preamps for quite a while. Good quality and fair prices.

The specs look good. The self noise at 22dBA is not likely to be an issue.

Get them terminated to a single mini plug and run them off the plug in power supplied by the M10. If you decide it's not what you were looking for you could easily resell them and go a different direction.

I recently bought Naiant XR cardioid capsules and a y-cable to go directly into my M10 and cobbled together ORTF & XY mounts for them to do field recording similar to what you intend. Haven't done a ton of recording with them yet.

About halfway down the page linked below is a recording of a thunderstorm rolling through Brooklyn that was made with the Naiant mics in ORTF configuration from my 3rd floor apartment window. The thunder wasn't passing close by, so it's muffled by the rain and street noise. The other recordings on the page are the M10's internal mics. I recorded rolling surf a couple weeks ago and another thunderstorm passing directly overhead a yesterday with the Naiants that I'll put up later today.

One thing I've found challenging is that the cardioid (or any other directional) pick up pattern is more prone to wind noise than an omni would be and requires wind protection, which adds to their cost.
