« on: February 11, 2007, 01:14:00 PM »
hey everyone...i really want to start recording...mostly hard shows...staind,breaking benjamin, godsmack, shinedown, evanescence etc...i have a budget for now at around $200 until the summer when i work full time at my job...ive had my eye on the microtrack 24/96 for awhile and im pretty set on eventually getting that...and im sure im going to need some sort of bass roll off battery box and i will be doing stealth recordings...any suggestions for beginner gear?

I know it'll blow your $200.00 budget clear to hell but there is a complete C4>UA5>JB3>SVU2 rig in the yardsale right now.  that is hands down the most solid newb rig ever!  easyily worth a grand.  I'd at least look into it and see how much he wants for it.

You can not beat that for a newbie rig.

I recommend Sound Professionals (look at SP-CMC2s first), or Church Audio (posts on here), for both mics and battery box.
UK based taper: MK4>Nbox Platinum>PCM-M10
AT853C>CA9200 / PIPsqueak>Tascam DR-2D

yeah i was looking at the church audio mics...seems not too expensive for a decent pair of mics...if im going to be taping the louder shows...do i definitely need a bass roll off or not? and what about a recorder itself...any suggestions?

For around $200 you can lay down some nice recordings-

start with an iriver/jb3 from the yardsale on this board. One of these will run you $100-150

Then I would say talk to Church Audio about some little clip on mic. Chris is a good guy and will hook you up.

Roll-off isn't always an issue, the iriver has built in limiting that will keep your levels cool. A battery box is also advised, as it will add some headroom for loud recordings.

Cheers, and good luck! +t

Talk to Chris Church about his gear.  IMO he props his stuff too much, but he does do good work...  His mics and preamps are perfect for your needs.

You must have a battery box with that md for sure! I would get something with a bass roll off sound professionals make a great one. I would use the line input and make sure AGC is turned off! go to minidisc.org for the user manual for that minidisc recorder so you can make your self familiar with its functions. Its a nice deck. I would not pay anymore then $50-65 MAX for that mindisic recorder. Say hello to my Friend Chris He mixes Finger 11 Tell him it's from Chris Church. But don't tell him your taping.... LOL
I was on tour with him a while back with a band called WAVE.

Good luck with your recording.
