try record->pause->pause with the d8's...
I’ve had a few weird experiences and a few close brushes with total weirdness of one sort or another, but nothing that’s really freaked me out or made me feel too awful about it. - Jerry Garcia

even sending s/pdif.  the d8 would not come out of pause even though it didn't say 'copy prohibit'.  both decks could get levels.

any ideas?  the V3 will soon be going to boulder for optical.

Just to clarify, the M1 is giving you a 'copy prohibit' message and the D8 simply won't come out of pause...

This is using the same 7-Pin?

Things that I have seen cause this...

Incompatible clocks...
doesn't seem to be the case since both decks are  behaving strangely.

Bad ground in the digi-cable...
You can check that one.

Deecks being sent incompatible signal...
I know you checked the Sample Rate, Bit Depth, Etc...

Have you tried connecting the V3 to say the digital input on a Receiver... maybe the V3 needs more than the optical add on!?

The Sony walkman's also used that 7-Pin port for an optional remote, they can interpret bad signal as control code and lock up on you.

Get Mike to give the V3 a once over and test the digi cable!

Good Luck!
Yes, but what do you HEAR?

Record>Play is the recommended start up...no need for Pause...
Not for a d-8 or a tascam da-p1.It's pause-record-pause.The record play only works with the sony m-1 and d-100.Asfar as the heads go you definatly don't want to leave your deck paused for along period of time. That will definatly cause your heads to wear out faster.

Hmm - I ran a D7 for 11 years - and never used pause...

Always started with Rec/Play...
