mic2496 in combination with DAT
« on: June 11, 2005, 09:13:29 PM »
First off is anyone on this board using this pre\AD with a DAT deck? I've read most of the threads dealing with running it into the JB3's and the problems with the truncating  word length down to 16 bits. Now are the effects of running the 24 bits into lets say a M1 going to be felt the same or is it not a problem, I'd really like to give one of these things a try any imput would help.

Len has built in a D8 setting for this box that outputs 16bits.  I don't know what the dither is, but I've measured it at 16 and it sounds pretty good for a stealthy pre-a/d combo.  You have to open the box and change some jumpers.  I don't remember which but I do remember finding them easily once inside.

This is new news!  But I don't see it mentioned on the C-S Mic2496 webpage anywhere even though he recently updated it with new information (03-26-2005 and 06-06-2005).  At any rate, if it dithers to 16-bit, Mic2496 would work alright.  If it doesn't dither to 16-bit, I personally don't like the sound degradation from truncation, though others don't seem to mind it.

I have an early model of the mic2496 that would not feed a 44.1 kH signal to an M1, only worked if you set the M1 at 48 kH.  It worked at 44.1 kH with other devices, but it was telling the DAT to expect 48 even when it was sending 44.1, and gave an error message.  Has this been fixed?

This was true even when you were going digital in via the 7 pin?

Yes, isn't that the only way to go in digital for an M1?.

Yes you are  right I guess I should have worded that a little different. I should have said while going digital in via the 7pin that dat will register what is coming in regardless of what the switch is set at because as far as I know those switches are for analog in only, correct me if I'm wrong I just may be.

Right.  What I meant was that when my mic2496 was set for 48 kH, the M1 recorded its signal fine, but when set for 44.1 kH the M1 gave me an error message.  Core Sound confirmed this was an issue, but not with more recent non-DAT devices.  I was asking whether the newer mic 2496s still had problems feeding a DAT at 44.1 kH.
