looking to spend $200 on a preamp...
« on: March 06, 2007, 02:00:22 PM »
hey everyone,

so, I;m looking to get  a new preamp. I have a Denecke AD20, but I've switched my recorder to the Zoom H4, so I ni longer have optical inputs. I really liked the sound oon the AD20, and would like to get something that sounds nice, that I can use with my Zoom. The Zoom only has 2 Female XLR inputs. Im looking to spend about $100-$225. Is this possible??? Unfortunately I am on a tight budget, or I would love to spend more. I;m just really in desperate need of some more warmth in my recordings.

thanks!,
Mike

I think your better off ditching the Zoom and getting an edirol r09 then you dont need the external DA and you can just get a nice preamp and be far ahead of the game. IMO.

ya I hear that, but I got a GREAT deal on the Zoom, and I also like the built in mics (good for semi-stealthing). So I am gonna stay with the Zoom for now. So, my question still stands. Anyone got any suggestions?  ;D

I think a UA-5 would be about your only bet for that much money. But it aint stealth.

UA-5 wouldn't be that great of a solution, as the signal path would go through the AD then the DA for the analog outputs. Something with analog passthrough would be better.

A used Presonus Firebox might be worth looking into as well.  It has 1/4" outs that would work with the 1/4" ins on the Zoom.  And I'm not jsut saying that because I have on listed in the Yard Sale, because I've decided to keep it.   ;)

It does have phantom. I've never liked the sound of the MV100. be interesting to see what you could do with it.

I don't own one anymore. I sold it a long time ago.
