only about $400 to spend, they were thinking of the rode nt-4.

i want to try the lsd2 but it's a little too pricey.

Try and talk them into the lsd2.  It really is a great mic, and I have yet to hear any tape that I liked with the NT-4.

there is also that shure VP something or other (VP88???) that looks decent, though I am not sure how much it costs.

The rode NT4 is considerably cheaper on Ebay...

I also happen to have one I would sell... cheap...

But, I'll be the first to say that I am not a big fan of it.  Doesn't have clarity in the highs.  It does work decently for nearfield recording, which is prolly what you're doing, right?

Seems to me that it would be a better idea to just get some C-1000s or something instead.  At least you can change configs that way.

his LSD2 is for sale, not sure what he wants for it though

we don't really want to go with a mic pair as we want setup to be as simple as possible.

any nt-4 recordings i can be pointed to?

Not really... I've used it right in front of a stage, but not onstage... I don't think it would be good for that, cause the caps are cards- wouldn't you want omni's for that?

I've used it as an overhead mic on a drum kit before... seemed to work well...

no, cards are fine for onstage...probably my preferred cap for that setting.

I can hook you up with some NT-4 samples as well.  I'd say it's nice up close but not great for the pa situation.  I don't understand why but it seems to be.  I have an instore recording that's just beautiful but my club stuff is lacking.

I'd have to agree with the consensus on the NT-4.  I've made a couple of recordings that are very nice, but would certainly be better with different mics.  One of my recordings is on the archive:

well if it sounds okay up close i don't have a problem recomending it...i know it's not gonna sound as nice as my mbho's but we also don't have that kind of money to spend
