I guess the Zoom F1 with the XLR add-on must be pretty small but there's no phantom power.

The Zoom H5 with its microphone module removed is the smallest one I believe.
It’s very nice and handy at that size.

But not that small.  Seeing the photo there of that device with headphones over one end of it prompted me to try my DT770 cans around my F1 - the F1 actually fits inside the earcups.  They won't quite close around it, but it's really that small.  I used it last night when wandering around the Terracotta Warriors exhibition here, fed from Roland binaural mics, in conjunction with an Osmo Pocket camera.  I found it very easy to operate by feel, clipped to my pocket under my jacket, stopping and starting in sync with the camera.  But it's fairly metallic so probably wouldn't do for high security situations.

Of course the F1 is smaller: it doesn’t have xlr inputs — which is the whole point of this thread!

I also doubt that the preamps and a/d of the F1 rise to the quality of the RFR.

Good point.... you can of course attach the Zoom XLR accessory but that's not much good without phantom (for most people here).  And then it's bigger.

given the bulk and metal of xlrs ive worked backwards from mics that dont need them, of which there are quite a few

schoeps cmr or cmbi
(schoeps, neumann, gefell)>nbobs>ipa (preferablly liberated from metal housing)
dpa 4011>mmp-g

im sure there are other compact condensers that dont use phantom. or maybe you could custom cable some ccms or 4021s to mini xlrs to use with recorders that do phantom on mini xlr (sax, etc)

Isn’t the pmd561 the smallest:

The H5 is 135 x 67 x 42 with a weight of 176g without external xy mic module.
If you don’t count the metal protection bar across the fader controls it’s thickness is only 32mm.
