Title: Looking to the next set of mics...
Post by: Nick's Picks on March 28, 2004, 07:59:55 AM
Hey now.
I know, i've only used these audix micros 2 times.  I'll use them at least 10 times before I sell them, I promise.

I really like them a lot, but I'm finding that my stereo is showing me the 40-20khz frequency responce of these mics....emphasis on the 40hz end.
The last time I used them, it sounds sort of "eh", and a little shy on the bottom end.
The first time I used them, they had very nice bass responce.  So, the jury is still out.

That said, I feel like I need the versatility of multiple polar patterns.  I could just pick up some card caps for these I suppose.
Carl and I were listening to a bunch of my older c422 recordings the other day, and man, that mic really cooked!  I can't wait to get at all teh 24/96 stuff I have mastered with it that now sit in my closet unheard.
With this in mind, i was thinking about looking into a pair of AKG c414 B-ULS.  I see stereo pairs w/windscreens, shockmounts, stereo bar, big ass stands (two), 20' cables and flight case going for $1598 on eBay with a "buy it now" option.  I bet I could contact the seller and get them to keep the stands and the cables and likely pick up a pair of these in the $1300-1400 range.
I'd rather have a c422, but a pair of these would be nice.  Same capsules and all.

I thought I would run my "thinking aloud" thoughts through the group here and see if any wisdom gets caught on the bumper on my way though...

Is that legal in Cali? I'm pretty sure it is OK here in Tennessee! But we don't talk about it in PUBLIC!!! Keep it in the family...;)

nick, i know you have a penchant for mics that are a bit off the beaten path of what most use, so let me suggest one to you.
how about the studio projects lsd2?  Stereo large diaphragm with the ability to change the direction of the capsules plus the polar patterning.  Depending on the retail of it im considering one for myself.  I really absolutely have fallen in love with this company- reminds me of the quality and service of ADK.

fyi- their info is at www.studioprojects.com

been looking at the LSD, and i'd give it a shot if it were not for...

- only 3 polar patterns (omni, card, 8)
- chinese construction.  Im just not sold on the "sound" of these chinese LD mics that are everywhere.

That lsd2 has kinda peaked my curiosity. I see it on ebay all the time. Nick, a c422 pops up on there about every one or two months. I'd say wait- I have a feeling lugging the 414's +shocks+ setup would be a pain in the ass. Were'nt you using someones c34? How'd you like it?

I know what you mean about added hardware w/the 414s + accessories.
And "stereo mic" has been one of my custome eBay searches for ever.  That's how I got my last c422.  I haven't seen one up there recently though.  Its been a while.  There was a c24 a month or so ago, but thats way out of my league.

I'm using Staggers c34.  Well, i'm taking care of it along with Carl...but it lives in my closet for the moment.
I like it a lot.  It is an amazing piece, and every  time I use it, i get a peek into its potential.  It has a unique sound.  Not at all like any small diaphram XY i've ever heard.

nick, i would caution you against judging all the chinese mics this way.  ive played with a lot of htem now and the studio projects stuff is up to par with the build quality of the neumanns.  you can feel it in the casing and even when you take them apart.

as per the 3 polar patterns i understand that, but i never use hypers if i can help it, so those 3 are the 3 id use anyways.

I am looking forward to trying out my first pair of chinese mics...the TL's ;D

hey, decided to try mostly on your comments and experienceing using them. Figure if they can make smoking tapes of non PA music, which to me tests a mic way more than PA recording, then they should be a rocking.

Nick if ya want a nice copy of the ADKs check out my recording from Ratdog the other night.  It's on bt.etree and if you don't have high speed PM me and I'll drop a copy in the mail.

I like the TLs better than just about any other mic out there....but that's just me.

yeah I dig em, but needed something smaller also.
My only reservation really with the TL's is that they rate at a max of 124 dB spl. So be aware in excruciatingly loud circumstances.
I've taped Ras  quite close to club pa's, and not had problems with overloads, but I have had a couple of supicious noises (though I think they were pa overloads, and not mic or front end issues).
Really looking forward to what you thnk.

I hear you on the smaller, reason I have my mk41's with actives...love the small footprint and great sound. I will be sure to post my feelings once I run the TL's. Get them on 4/1, won't be taping until 4/23, going to be a long 3 weeks.  :'(

well if you are anything like I am, you'll have them set up in the lving room until then ;)

for sure, have to practice setting those LD mics up..can't wait to try bluemlin, and will have an excellent opportunity to do it.

Hey Nick,
I looked into a pair of those mics as well. The ones on ebay for that price are not "technically" matched. There is a version that came out that is supposed to replicate the old 414EB in sound and performace and is a stereo matched pair. To my knowledge it's the only pair that comes from AKG matched.  I really dig that mic. Some of my favorite recordings are from that mic.  I just have a hard time wanting to run LD's due to their size. I'm not a big fan of LD's in far field recording as well. The diaphrams respond way too slow.
Many people consider the 414 "the" reference mic.
BTW last time I talked to Jim Oade, he said he could still get the set from his supplier. It seemed like for just under $1400.

hmm...
good to know (the oade connection).
I would have asked them what was the deal any way.

there are two flavors of 414.
the TLII and the B-ULS.  The TL is sold as stereo pairs, but its a vocal mic with a high end boost.  I want flat...like pancake.
they are actualy a very small mic for LD.  I've eyed a kit recently and admired them.

I checked out the LSD stereo mic a little closer.  30-20khz responce.  wont due.  I need full range.

A brand new c426b came up on eBay yesterday.  Carl is "courting" it.  Seeing if it might sell for considerably less than its retail price.  I hope so!
And yes, AKG does not sell "matched pairs" of anything that I know of, other than this 414 kit.

Hey Nick,
Is it the TL that is the stereo pair? Cause the ones I looked at were ULS but were made to look like the old E's with a silver finish. Plus they were given the same frequency response and supposedly the same sonics as the E's. But I could have sworn they were ULS's. ???

Im a little confused myself.
both models are sold in paris.
one is sold as a "stereo pair"
the other is sold as a "matched pair"

??
this is what Doug Oade told me yesterday.
Any way, i know the TL-II is the one w/the emphasis in the high end and the B-ULS is the straight one, and the pair I want.
:)

The more I think about them, the more sure I am that they are *the one* for me.  You can run any stereo configuration with them, from M-S to 20' spacked omnis.  Very versitile!  They will keep me busy with all of these options!

I know I have often wanted to own a pair myself. My want list is so big though and my pocketbook is so small.
