I run the V3 with my TL's and love the sound...others think its too bright a combination..but I don't hear it.
I am sure V2/modsbm-1 would sound nice...so would V2/mini-me...but the all in one box size of the V3 makes things easier when truckin shit around, especially when you already have the TL's to lug.

I'll qualify my statements by saying that I don't have experience with the V3 or V2, but to me, if you can handle 2 boxes, I think the V2-Modsbm-1 would be nice, b/c the modSBM-1 would color it up a bit.
I like color and warmth, and you'll get more of it through the V2-ModSBM-1 than through the V3. If you don't want warmth and color, the V3 is probably better for you.

I run V2 ->sonic ad2k (aka benchmark 2402) and I love it. I would like an all-in-one box but I love the ad2k - so I lug it around. ;D It is no longer made but this is coming out soon and it looks really neat.

If it is anything like the ad2k it will sound great. The metering is fantastic. The variable sample rate/bit depth for the secondary digi-out is nice too...

would you call the ad2k a warm piece?

No, I think it is pretty transparent. The SBM1 seemded very warm to me - I used to run it when I had my KM184s and it was too much. I switched toi the GP ADC20 and while it was not as 'warm' I just did not like it. My AD1K was great and I miss it - but I like the sound of the ad2k the most. I can't wait to get a 24bit recorder ;D

looks really neat but I can't find it on the Benchmark site...

hijacking bastards ;)

v2>ad2k is def one of the most solid combos ive ever heard, w/ 4023's taboot :)
id have that rig if i wanted to haul around all that crap :)

see, i was just checking to see if that benchmark preamp/adc was suitable for tapers, if it is i was going to recommend you run it with your TL's ;)
there's a used v2 in the yard sale fwiw
no pre in the benchmark ad2k+

I ran TL's > V3 for a year... loved the results. keep in mind that by the time you have a battery, the V3, mics, suspension mounts, and random crap you have a work out over your shoulder...
The sound - especially slpit omni made the work worth it.

how about that!
thanks man, I had no idea :)

does it have higher sampling freq than 48k ??? just wondering, since id mostly run 24/48 anyway to save space :)

I think it does up to 96 kHz, although the description sez 192 kHz. I think it is a non-issue becasue it is not on Benchmark's site and this site http://www.jrrshop.com/product_info.php?cPath=25_151_94&products_id=3616 is giving a product not found error. I don't think it exists. Anyway, there is a mode switch on the left side of the unit, and next to it a few rows of lights. The first row is labeled (from top to bottom) 48, 44.1 and EXT (I think). The second row is labeled x1, x2, and ADAT. I am guessing that to get 96 kHz, the 48 light would be lit and the x2 light would be lit. For 88.2, the 44.1 light would be lit and the x2 light would be lit, and so on.
Looks really great; I hope they actually produce it.

I ran TL's>V3 for around 2 months. I just didn't like something about it. But to give it a fair chance most of those recordings were in large venues in the TS.
I just picked up a AD2K for 350.00 at a local studio. I'm stoked. Can't wait to run this. Now all I need is a 24 bit recorder. >:D

Just curious, any problem using the AD2k+ with a fixed gain pre like the 148?

I hope not. I have not run it yet.

Yes it is a problem. it's not going to work.

this looks to be a non-portable AD box. the DAC1 that benchmark makes is sick

that will most definitely be trickey to run with a fixed gain pre-amp...

It is half-rack sized, so it should be portable. somewhere around the size of the ad2k. The rack ears make it a bit wider.

I know someone who had problems running the fixed gain N-Box with an AD2K.

i've ran both tl>v3 and tl>v2>modsbm1 and i prefered tl>v2>modsbm1 without a doubt in my mind.
-
I have only run my TL's with my V3, but could imagine them sounding damn good with the V2/modsbm-1 combo, but then again, I find my TL V3 recordings to be full of bass and would think the modsbm-1 would make that almost too phat...but I have no point of reference.

i did run hpf 2 frequenty with the v2>modsbm1 setup. not much at all with the V3. still sounded better to me. really nice and fat sounding.

Kinda late on this thread, but I'd definitely recommend V2>(mod)SBM1. I ran both, and definitely preferred that combo.
I've got a Dickey Betts show I taped with that rig (1st set cards/2nd set hypers), PM me if you wanna check it out.

that would make sense, but I am not a fan of running hpf2 or hpf1 unless I really have to, and if the combo I am running forces that issue all the time, then I would feel that is not the best combo, but that is just me...I use to love that combo with my MBHO's

could i still get the mod oade does for the sbm???
-
I don't think that doug is still doing the mods, though I would call just to be sue
if he's not PM Todd R on this board, he does similiar mods to what Doug does :)

I love the mod-sbm-1. Great piece of gear, IMO.

i ran pfife's tls > v3, once in a small bar and once in a normal theater type venue. both recordings came out crystal clear and nice sounding. the theater show was mmw, and the bass is freaking crazy, but its a very tight bass. which could be good or bad, depends on the listener i guess.

i've also had excellent results with my TL>v3 setup. love their sound.

I also run TL's>v3 love the sound especially with the bumblebees. I also ran the TL's>v2>mme also a very good combo, but it's nice having to haul around one pice of gear and one battery
