could someone please tell me about the diffs between these two formats and if one is better or more reliable? Which is more likely to play in a large amount of machines before the other would?

Thanks for the information....+T and Lotsa :D
Seems like DVD-R might be the better of the 2 as far as compatibility and reliability are concerned.

Hehe, i just got a dvd burner that supports both! :)

So which media will you choose?

I have a dual format burner and have better success playing back DVD-R on others DVD players(pc and av/stereo units)

the dvd-r vs dvd+r is kind of like betamax vs vhs.
It's kinda funny to use that as a parallel. From what I've read, Beta was a superior format in both picture quality and audio capability but we all got duped by the marketers.
Everyone wanted to buy a vcr in the format that would win the war...somehow they convinced us that was VHS and then it was like tipping a boat with water in it. The more it tipped, the more water rushed over to the other side and pretty soon it was decided ;)
In this case, I don't think there are any quality differences - just compatibility. I also bought a dual burner and will probably end up trying all kinds of media and end up with whatever works at the right price.

Whatever is cheaper. I've used both with no problems. Once i notice any issues with one media, i'll switch to the other.

Wasn't Sony basically trying to monopolize the market w/ Beta. I thought that's the reason it failed.
FWIW, I just scored a NEC 8x+/8x- burner (ND 2500A). Gotta love Newegg.....$131 delivered in two days! Hot off the assembly line. Manufacture date: Dec 2003 & delivered on Jan 13. Looks like I'll be getting some dvd-r blanks tomorrow.
It's funny to think that the 1st cd burner I bought was almost twice as much. Ahhh, progress.... :)
