I'm putting together a new rig and am trying to get a UA-5 to take care of my middle stage. But, since they are no longer in production. Any recomendations on something else i can use as Pre/MicPower/AD for around the 200$ range?
Doesn't have to be a single unit, although that'd be nice.

Well, just because they don't make them anymore doesn't mean you can't find a UA-5 here in the Yard Sale section or on eBay for that matter. Although it may cost a little more than $200 and then over $400 if you want an upgraded one. It is a nice box for an all-in-one solution. What mics / recording device are use looking to use?
-
JB3 to record (gotta track one of those down as well). Mics, i'm going with some cheap Sampson C02s for now, the jb3 and UA5 will pretty much break the bank as far as what i have to spend. The Sampsons i got for 80$, not the best, but i've heard good things about them from people here on the list and at 80$ for a set, well, they'll do for starter mics.

Graham Patten DMIC-20
its a pre/ad all in one w/ a coax out

that kills the jb3 without a hosa or similar to convert coax>optical. MT maybe? too pricey?
-
but the dmics are cheap, and for 50 or so more dollars, he could snatch the hosa odl-276 coax><optical box
-
Ding, Ding, Ding
I think we may have a winner!
-
Does it have phantom as well? That was another requirement.

It would appear that the Graham Patten DMIC-20 has been superseded by the DMIC-24 (only 48 not 96) but it certainly doesn't seem cheap, here in the UK the distibutor is selling for £610 ($1020), I can't find any US websites quoting prices.
Even in the Yard Sale the last one with a price was $450 (although it had had $100 worth of mods).
If there are bargins out there on the DMIC-20 would you mind posting a link, otherwise jimi56 I think you're going to end up getting a UA-5 for your $200.
-
the ODL-276 coax > optical > jb3 is solid (just don't try to split the optical!) and yeah, the dmic-20 does have phanton power.
____________
though, fwiw... part of me is wishing I had invested in a UA-5...

Isn't this something else entirely
"The SoundPals DAC-20 is a stereo, 20-bit, AES digital-to-analog converter"
Not a Pre/AD ?
Although price seems okay
-
This is an digital to analogconverter. Though I wish someone would buy it, it would not work as an a/d. You would want to use this for playback.
-
D'oh. I should read the post more carefully before redirecting. :scared:
-
No sweat, I do the same ;D

actually, i havent seen many dmic-20's for sale here, when i sold mine in jan/feb 2004, it was only like 225 or 250 is what i sold it for, nowadays, if you could find a used dmic-20, i bet it would only be 150-200 MAX
digi-mod ua5 def may be the way to go, i was just throwing out an overlooked pre/ad

I wasn't critising the option, the recordings I've heard with DMIC-20 infact to my ears sound better than the a digimoded UA-5 (ie no other preamp mods). For $150-200 it would seem a good buy since there no need to break out the soldering iron but of course your limited to 20 bit and 48kHz (no sweat if your going JB3 anyway) and avalibility.

The problem with this line of thought is... Ar eyou always going to use that jb3? don't you dream of upgrading that component too?
I'm not too much of a gear slut mostly because i don't have much of a budget but, I frequently check myself as I gaze at a piece of gear that I want and think, will that work with what I ultimately want to be running? this can be balanced with the other thought, will the purchase/resale value/depreciation be worth it?
