Fade envelope in Audition CS6 - quiet acoustic shows
« on: November 01, 2012, 12:04:01 AM »
If I have an acoustic show, where the crowd noise (between songs) is much louder than the general music SPL:

1. I have been using Audition CS6 fade envelope, a curve something like: ---\________/---
2. However, not matter how precise I get to where the crowd noise gets louder between songs, the volume reduction is audible.

How can I do this smoothly, so the crowd noise can be greatly attenuated, but the overall recording still sound "natural"?

Any advice appreciated, thanks so much all!!

Usually 3 db reduction has been the smoothest for me.  Anything more, is almost always noticeable.

Usually I find reductions (or increases) in volume unnatural if they occur too quickly.  You might try lengthening the transition, or applying a curved transition.  You could also try compression instead of or in addition to the volume envelope.

I use envelope for this a lot in Cool Edit. amplify the music using a curved in/out from 100% to maybe 180% then back down to 100%, use the reverse of this, try 100-60-100 for the applause area.  If you use % vs db, to me it is more understandable...Brians suggestion of splining the changes to be smooth curves makes it pretty imperceptable to me

I'd try running a compressor on just those those applause sections and use the automation lane to turn it on and off.
