New wireless router suggestions?
« on: January 11, 2013, 06:58:27 PM »
Thinking about upgrading my router. Rocking the Linksys WRT54GL with Tomato on it now, and it's great, but I'd like to add some features.

Qualifications:

1. Can install Tomato and/or DD-WRT
2. Can use as a NAS
3. Can attach a printer *
4. Dual Band
5. Guest network option *
6. Gigabit ports
7. Cost $200 or less.

* I could live without these if needed. Everything else is mandatory.

I'm reading up on this now, but figured someone here might have some first hand experience.

I keep wifi and wired on separate devices.

This is what I would get: http://www.cnx-software.com/2012/07/19/tp-link-wr703n-23-hackable-openwrt-wi-fi-802-11n-router/
TP-Link 703N
That will allow you to install OpenWRT

Or there's the 702N if you don't care for a different firmware: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833704134

I have the 702N and it works really well with almost all devices. I may have the 702N set to N band only because the old laptop can't connect to the internet. Not a big deal for me, though.

As far as a wired router, I really like RouterBoard: http://routerboard.com/ But I'm not certain if you can make it a NAS server or print server, both of which I would use something else for.

Happy hacking!
