Tascam DR-07 and DR-40 Timing
« on: January 25, 2013, 05:07:05 PM »
Hey all! Happy New Year! (It's been a while)

I bought myself an early Christmas present mid December, a Tascam Dr-40. I also have an DR-07. I've been recording shows with CA-14 and NAK300, with the CA14 going to the DR-07, and the NAK300 going to the DR-40.

The problem I am having is timing. (Sorry, I'm sure there's a technical term for this) Basically, I load both audio into one Audacity file. I use the time shift tool to make sure both recordings are in sync. The first few songs are good, but over time, the DR-07 falls behind, or the DR-40 speeds ahead, depending on how you want to look at it. Both recorders are set to 16/44.1.

Can anyone explain what is happening, and how I can fix this on the recorder? Can it even be done?

Thanks.
Chris

Has worked for me for quite some time mixing DR-07 and PCM D50 sources.

^^ Hoppedup has pointed you in the right direction. Sadly the clocks on pretty much all decks are not exact - not even between two of the same model.

If you intend to do 4-channel a lot, I would definitely recommend investing in a 4-channel deck, like the DR-2D (at the lowest end), the R-26 (at the next-lowest end, and most compact unit with P48) or a DR-680 (if you don't care about size or reliability).  For the occasional show aligning is alright, but if you do SBD/AUD most of the time (like I do) it gets old quickly.

HUH?

My buddy's had a 680 for quite some time now and has had ZERO reliability issues.   The reliability concern is if you use the wrong type of DVD battery with it (as reported) but it's not "generally" unreliable.

Also, use one source untracked and one source tracked, and align that way. But like was stated already, if you do this alot, just buy a cheapo Tascam DR2D and youre golden, PonyBoy ;)
