Recommendations for upgrade from fiio x1 and x3?
« on: September 20, 2018, 06:22:56 PM »
I do like my fiio and thinksound ms02 but ready for a sound upgrade. I like the thinksounds a lot but wondering if there’s something better than fiio for say -$350-400? Nice detail but slightly warm?

Thanks Marc

If you can handle over ear headphones, Audioquest Night Hawks or Owls play nicely with fiio. The Hawks provide a tremendous amount of isolation but the Owls will give you more if you need it. This might be a better option than a headphone amp.

I tried a lot of of inears and couldn't justify the price increase over a well sealed pair of MS 01.

I have a cmoy headphone preamp with a nice opamp that sounds pretty darn good. It runs on 2 9 volt batteries. Grado's portable is the same but in a nice mahogany box. It might be too big for portable use, though.

My Fiio X3 second gen died a year after I bought it. I liked the Fiio’s ease of use and the pristine sound (much cleaner than my iPod Classic with Apple Lossless files) but the weak link of the Fiio is definitely its software. That’s what failed on mine and none of the upgrades helped. My only choose was to send it back to China or take a $50 credit for a remanufactured unit.

I wish I could replace it with something that had great sound at s decent price but I doubt I would ever buy another Fiio. Their reputation just isn’t that good. I do like their sound and features and ergonomics.

I need something with Gapless FLAC playback, drag and drop capabilities, god sound, and decent software that will last more than a year.

Yes, you could say that. ;)

Posting with a smart phone sometimes leaves a lot to be desired.

Just throwing out suggestions, I've not had either of the Fiio's or the xDuoo

Or an old cell phone with one of these?
