I'm seriously considering picking up a Sony PCM M1...what are your opinions on this deck?

imo, it's a great small DAT deck.
if you plan on patching with it, I HIGHLY recomend picking up a digital splitter as the M1 output voltage is somewhat incompatable with other decks such as D7/8 and DA-P1

It's a great portable deck, IMO.  How will you use it:

Analog-in?
Digital-in?
Open taping?
Stealth?

The M1 is the only deck I've ever owned, but it is a great little deck. The analog in is pretty sweet for the size, great for stealthing as well. For open taping, it has a nice clean display which I use often, because my UA5 does not have VU meters.

Bought mine new, never looked back. I might think about going with a JB3 to replace my little MD deck, but I'll never get rid of this DAT.

best small portable, IMO of course, period.
i've had a D7, D8, M1 and used a casio DA-7 and i truly love the M1
if you are not going to be using the A/D, there's no real reason not to get a D100 instead and save some money.

So...if he is going to use the ADC, get the M1 instead of the D100?  Why's that?  ???

the D100 and the M1 are the exact same except the M1 has defeatable SCMS

they are the same decks except as stated above, the M1 is a professional grade deck, and thus no SCMS...the A/D stages are not different at all.  IMHO, the D100 is actually a better value if you can get it new because of the LCD remote, which rocks for stealthing.

now that I think about it, I think that Cooker was referring to the SCMS of the M1.
if running line-in, then you can defeat the SCMS with the M1, but not with the D100, therefore the M1 would "technically" be the better deck in this situation...unless of course you dont care about SCMS

My understanding of SCMS is that it only matters if you are trying to spin another dat in a machine that does enforces SCMS.  In my history, I have spun several DATs D100 out to R300, and R300 digi out to my Audiophile 2496...never had a SCMS violation...

fwiw, the Audiophile 2496 automatically strips the SCMS code

you can always make a digital clone from a D100 master on a consumer deck.  on pro-decks, you can ignore SCMS.

I believe that is the key if memory serves...if the machine receiving the digital input enforces SCMS and there is a SCMS violation on the tape it is a problem....I dont believe that home decks or most sound cards have that problem...I could be wrong though...happens at times  ;D

schwilster;

you can, but the US models wasn't supplied with the remote.  i've seen the European models with the same remote, but in black.
