New rig -- help me figure out what I need
« on: December 15, 2003, 11:36:34 PM »
Okay, I'm upgrading from Sony MD and AT822.

Here's what I've bought so far:
-- Used DAP1
-- Used battery system (with proper termination for DAP1)
-- New Edirol UA-5 (going to do the digimod)
-- New battery pack for UA-5 (with whatever connectors it comes from dealer with)
-- Manfrotto stand (had it already)
-- Pair of Oktava MK012s (had them already for acoustic guitar tracks)
-- No-frills mic mounting bar

So what else do I need? I know I need the following; what should I buy, and where?
-- Shock mounts for Oktavas
-- Cables

What else haven't I thought of yet?

All suggestions welcome.

tapes, lots of tapes

a coax cable

you seem to be doing well. I carry duct tape to tape my stand down.

Canare Star Quad cables and Neutrik connectors from Markertek.com, build them yourself for real cost savings.

I like that AT8410a's for shock mounts...might also want to look at windscreens (for in and outdoors).

Coax cable for going from UA-5 > DAP1.

Flashlight.

Got a bag setup for carrying everything?  Perhaps tupperware/pelican cases to keep things organized.

DAT Tapes :P

Not sure what else comes to mind....  mostly "little stuff".

i second the AT8410 shockmounts.   but yea, mic cables, which u probably have, or upgrade to some better ones, and then a coax is very necesary.  a bag to carry it all in.  i'm just using a cheap old navy backpack, but its pretty small for a full size backpack, and comfy, but i'm gonna be getting a targus rackgear, cause like u i have a full size dat, and it would be nice to have shelves in it for it all.  and then you can have it all set up to go in your pack, and have less hassel. +t for the upgrade.  hope it works out for you.  peace.

Definatly need a bag.  I like the Nova 5 I've been using....you might also look at the Rackgear packs.  I'll second the 8410 shocks as well.  This is the best price I've found anywhere if you decide to go with them:

All good advice -- thanks!

BCostigan -- thanks for the link -- good price! -- just went there and ordered two.

I have just bottom-end Monster mic cables from Guitar Center. Considering that this is a cost-conscious rig, is that a big detractor from the sound quality I'll be getting?

And I have always assumed that spending more money on coax cables doesn't make much different in sound. Is that right?

i use monster pro cables for my mic cables, i don't really believe there will be all that much difference in cabling choices.  either make them yourself from the quality parts mentioned above, or buy some decent cables.  don't just go to guitar center and pick up the cheapest set you can find though.  plus with monster cables they have a lifetime guarantee and you can bring them into any store that sells them and get them replaced.
as for your coax cable, the rat shack orange special should be plenty good.
don't get the sabrasom shockmounts, i think you've done well getting the at's.  the sabrasom's break very easily.  mine are held together with lots of super glue right now.  i'm thinking of upgrading to duct tape and bubblegum!

If the Oktava's will fit in the Shure a53m's thats the shockmount I'd buy. Actually I did just buy them ;)

Cheapest place I've found them

simp- though you make a reference to going to guitar center and buying cheap cables, guitar center does carry the BLUE series of cables which are really nice for the cash

jeez, if you're going to do it right get the westone custom fit earmolds with the 25db musician's earplugs.

true...however i was speaking of the cheapo live wire cables that they practically give away when you buy anything...they do carry quality cables though.

those are very nice.  if i was a musician, i would probably be wearing them, or in ear monitors.  since i'm not, and not subjecting my ears to high db's everyday, i think the etymotics will do. $12 for 20db, instead of $162 for 25.

I already have custom-fitted earplugs, from my days playing in bands, so I'm set there.
