Hey Cable Makers out there.
Has anyone every made a threaded coaxial cable for connecting external power to the Shure FP-24?
I pulled the specs for its power and it is listed below:
Power:
External: 5 – 14 VDC via threaded coaxial connector* (5.5 mm
outer diameter, 2.1 mm inner diameter); Pin positive, sleeve neg-
ative; Voltages above 14 VDC cause no damage to unit, but will
open an internal poly fuse that will reset when voltage is re-
moved.
*Threaded coaxial connector provided for use with power sup-
plies not equipped. For instructions on how to solder this connec-
tor to a Shure PS20, see Figure 5
I know nothing of electronics, but does this mean that supplying a minimum of 5volts DC would power the unit sufficiently? If so, I assume some of these USB 5v power bank batteries on the market would work.
Has anyone built a cable that has a threaded coaxial (locking) needed for FP-24 terminated in a USB or MicroUSB on the other end. Is this even possible?
Please let me know as I am looking into this option if someone is willing to make a cable.

I plan on making one for the SD MP-2. I believe they have the same power jack. My research shows that it takes a Switchcraft S761KS15 plug and I ordered a few from Mouser:

When they get here (tomorrow according to the tracking number) I plan to make one with a USB connector on the other end and see how it does on 5V. I've got a few rechargeable phone packs I'd like to try out. I'll keep you informed.
I've been using Lithium AAs and I'm pretty impressed. The SP-2 will go over 8 hours while providing 48V to my Neuman KM-184s in a test setup (not much SPL on the mics--just background noise in my house).

By all means let one of the excellent cable builders here make you a cable for running external power. But if you ever need to travel light I get 6+ hours of 48V phantom with my CM3s with the rechargables linked below, and they have a higher current draw than any of your mics:

Does SPL of a venue affect run times on battery consumption? Ie if it is louder = more current draw, etc?

Peluso's website says the CMEC-6 has current consumption of "< 3.0 mA". Line Audio CM3 is 3.5 mA.

As to your second question, I have no idea. I can't imagine it would make a difference, but maybe someone else here can give a better answer.

I already have some of those batteries so I will run some tests!
Hopefully someone else can chime in on the SPL question. I am curious if it affects it at all

I was at Lowes earlier today and they have what appears to be the Energizer version of these (http://www.energizer.com/batteries/rechargeable-batteries/Pages/power-plus-aa.aspx (http://www.energizer.com/batteries/rechargeable-batteries/Pages/power-plus-aa.aspx)). I picked up a 4-pack for $11.37 and the cashier gave me a receipt with a link for a $5.00 rebate from Energizer. I'll give them a try and report back.

Here is an alternative to the Switchcraft connector if you need a right-angled connector:

I spliced this w/ a usb cable and it worked fine w/ a usb battery, although the wires in the usb cable are really thin and kind of hard to solder. I also got an unassembled USB connector from digikey but the soldering tabs in the ones I got were so small I just hacked a usb cable I already had. After looking around there are usb assemblies that have bigger soldering tabs and might be worth trying.

Thanks for the tip on the batteries! I had some of those lying around already. I charged them up and put the in the FP24 with my Pelusos out to my M10. I got 8 hours 24 minutes of good run time before the signal started to deteriorate. Nice to know I can use those in a pinch! :clapping:

I get over 6 hours on Eneloops powering 414's with my FP24. I have a battery cable that came with mine for a Tekkon but never used it since I run the rechargeables.

I can only answer the question for Schoeps microphones, which use class "A" circuitry; the net current draw is always the same, whether the microphones are idling or at maximum SPL.
