Title: how long can an SLA be shelved without damage?
Post by: dr.ph0b on July 25, 2005, 10:13:21 AM
since they lose power over time just sitting there, and a deep discharge will damage an SLA, whats the shelf life of a fully charged 6v and 12V SLA?

the power sonic ones can last up to a year without being charged if stored at safe temperature.

i wouldnt rtust that tho, batteries like sla's lose about 1% of life each day, so i would charge up about once every 3-4 months to be safe!

If you have a charger that will switch over to float the battery at it's maintenance voltage, it's much better for the battery in the long run to leave the SLA battery floating.  I have a very old SLA close to 7 years old and it still works like a champ.

If you don't have a charger that will do that, buy one and leave your battery attached to it all the time when not in the field.

I always just store them fully charged - my 6v and 12v sla's were purchased spring of 98 and all still work beautifully...
