Title: P mod, W mod, stock UA5 w/ mc012s???
Post by: justink on August 27, 2003, 07:49:09 PM
trying to get some opinions...

i like my vocals to be real crisp and bright, but some say the warm mod is better for the oktavas..???

it's a good chunk of change, so i want to get it right.

thanks!

Running my MC012s for the first time with a pmod this weekend at Seattle's Bumbershoot festival (LOS, Nickel Creek, DTB, NMAS, KDTU).  I'll let you know how they turn out.

I'm interested in hearing the P-mod UA-5 with the Oktava's too.
I've entertained the idea of getting a DMIC-20 for the crisper sound. Does anyone have experience with this combo? I've never heard an MC012> P-mod UA-5 or MC012> DMIC-20 recording.

i ran oktavas for awhile - not w/ the ua5 - but i'd think the pmod would be a better match for them.  i'd stay away from anything that accentuated the oktava low end.

see... i'm with you... but there's a shitload of people who think opposite.  but the problem is, i've not heard enough tapes done w/ either to make an educated decision yet!   >:(

damit, i just want to get something that will make the vocals really present and have a nice low end too...  maybe i should look for another a/d preamp for the mc012's???

definately find tapes made with each and see what sounds best to you.  i've never heard a mc012 > pmod or mc012 > wmod tape but the oktava combination that i liked the most was mc012 > v2.  the v2 did a nice job of tightening up the lows and had some very nice souding highs as well.  as always, just my .02

well... i think the pmod would give you a nice v2/v3 like sound without spending as much money.  fwiw there is a nice v2 w/ an ecocharge battery system for $700 which isn't too far from the pmod ua5 which will run you about $550.  food for thought.   ;D

Ok, because of user stupidity, I blew the DTB tape, but did get 4 good songs from the set.

Didn't get NMAS because they weren't letting anyone set up.

Missed LOS and Nickel Creek because the venue staff were a bunch of jackasses and I didn't feel like waiting around for an ok to tape 15 seconds before the first song (which is what happened).

Went for the smaller shows and got some decent tapes:

-Derek Trucks Band (incomplete)
-Kathleen Edwards
-Reggie Watts (lead singer for Maktub)
-Willy Porter
-Gordon Downie (lead singer for the Tragically Hip)

All-in-all they came out pretty good.  Tried a couple different configurations and locations.  A few spots of light wind noise on all of tapes (outdoor festival), but nothing too bad.  Not much I could do - I was using two sets of windscreens and still got some noise.

The verdict: I do like the pmod sound with the Oktavas.

I'd love to, but it will be a while.  I'm going on vacation for a while and I can't do my own conversions, so I have to beg Kevin (blu666z) to do them for me.

Why wasnt NMAS letting anyone set-up?

Why wasnt NMAS letting anyone set-up?
It wasn't the band, it was the venue.  Signs the whole way in saying "no video or audio taping at the request of the bands" or something like that.  The signs were up all weekend.  NMAS was opening up for Bonnie Raitt & a bunch of other folks, so they didn't give in.  LOS was opening for Nickel Creek, so they did give the ok as LOS started their first song, but I didn't wait around that long & headed over & got Reggie Watts's set instead.
