For lappy taping in the field?! Sure, sounds like a neat little rig...
Have you sourced for any third-party plug-in power yet? You'll find that the external batteries can be almost as expensive as the laptop itself!

starting to think long term 671 or Fostex thingy is a better bet. In a small safe local venue my thinkpad is fine for 24 bit.

48 or 96? You can't get quite an hour out of 24/96 so then you have to start a new recording. I was going to do the exact same thing, but went 24/48 with a MT24/96 instead.
